history

Arbroath Monastery ruins , 2004

The settlement emerged from the Arbroath Monastery, which was founded in 1178 and given market and court privileges .

In 1320 eight earls and a number of other Scottish nobles who had gathered in the monastery stood up for the independence of Scotland from England with the Declaration of Arbroath addressed to the Pope .

In 1394 a port was built, which led to the emergence of a fishermen's settlement. In 1559 the place received the status of a Royal Burgh . As a result of the Reformation , the monastery fell into disrepair.

From the end of the 18th century, Arbroath became an important location for the textile industry. After targeted promotional measures by the city council, the importance as a fishing port grew in the 19th century.

In 1906, on the western edge of the city, the Elliot Junction railway accident occurred .
