Spa-Francorchamps 6-hour race 2012

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first 6-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps , also WEC 6 Hours of Spa, Spa-Francorchamps , took place on May 5, 2012 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and was the second round of the FIA World Endurance Championship of that year .

The race

After the introduction of the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2012 , the traditional 1000 km race at Spa-Francorchamps switched from the European Le Mans Series to this new racing series. With the exception of the Sebring 12-hour race and the Le Mans 24-hour race , all of the races were driven over a distance of six hours. This turned the 1000 km race into a 6-hour race.

The racing debut of the Toyota TS030, which had already been announced for the race in Sebring , had to be postponed again after the only fully operational chassis was so badly damaged during a test drive at the Paul Ricard Circuit in early April that it had to be abandoned. As a result, the first use of the LMP1 car built by Toyota Motorsport in Cologne and race- supervised by Oreca was postponed to the Le Mans race . The Pescarolo 03 , based on the Aston Martin AMR-One and prepared by the team of the Le Mans record starter Henri Pescarolo , was not yet ready to race either.

Audi Sport under the direction of Wolfgang Ullrich reported four Audi R18s through Joest Racing . The two lightweight R18 ultra and the two hybrid R18 e-tron quattro were allowed to drive freely up to the last pit stops, after which the sequence was determined. In the end, Marc Gené , Romain Dumas and Loïc Duval won in the R18 ultra with a lead of 50 seconds over the R18 e-tron quattro of André Lotterer , Benoît Tréluyer and Marcel Fässler .
