Rui Águas (racing driver)
Rui Águas (born February 29, 1972 in Nampula ) is a Portuguese racing driver .
Racing career
Monopostosport
The Monopostokarriere of in Mozambique -born Rui Águas began in 1993 in the Formula Ford , where he fourth overall in this year British championship was. In front of him, the future overall winner of Le Mans, Guy Smith, came in second. In 1994 he switched to Formula Renault and finished second overall in the British championship . Formula Renault followed Formula 3 with a sixth place overall in the German championship in 1996 (champion Jarno Trulli ).
In 1997 and 1998 , Águas competed in two seasons in the International Formula 3000 Championship . In 1997 he finished tenth overall with seven points, but was disqualified from fourth after the second race at the Hockenheimring . In 1998 he remained without points. After a year in the World Series Formula V8 3.5 , he switched to GT racing in 2000 .
GT sport
After first racing in the Renault Clio Cup, Águas became a regular starter in the Italian GT championship from 2005 . This is where his long-term collaboration with the Italian racing team AF Corse began . He finished the 2005 season in third place overall. The collaboration with AF Corse resulted in a large number of international racing series. He drove a Ferrari F430 in the FIA GT Championship , where he finished fourth overall in the GT2 class in 2006 with Mika Salo behind Jaime Melo , Matteo Bobbi and Tim Mullen .
He had other races in the European and American Le Mans Series , the International GT Open and from 2012 in the FIA World Endurance Championship . In 2013 he finished second overall in the Championship Trophy for LMGTE Am Drivers. His partner in the Ferrari F458 Italia was Vicente Potolicchio . The trophy was won by Jamie Campbell-Walter and Stuart Hall in the Aston Martin Racing - Vantage V8 . In 2016 he won this trophy. This time Emmanuel Collard and François Perrodo were his partners in the AF Corse-Ferrari F458 Italia.
His best place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2015 was 26th place. In Sebring he was 27th in the final ranking that same year .
