Petit Le Mans 2011

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 14th Petit Le Mans , also Petit Le Mans, Road Atlanta , took place on October 1, 2011 in Road Atlanta and was the ninth round of the American Le Mans Series of this year.

The race

The 2011 American Le Mans Series season ended with the Petit Le Mans . Since the race and the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup counted, both the works cars were of Peugeot and the prototypes of Audi at the start. The two factory Peugeot 908s were driven by the teams Franck Montagny / Stéphane Sarrazin / Alexander Wurz and Sébastien Bourdais / Simon Pagenaud / Anthony Davidson . A third Peugeot was used by Oreca . Their 908 HDi FAPs were driven by Nicolas Lapierre , Marc Gené and Nicolas Minassian .

The two Audi R18 TDIs registered by Joest Racing were entrusted to the three-person teams Tom Kristensen / Allan McNish / Rinaldo Capello and Marcel Fässler / Timo Bernhard / Romain Dumas . After the disaster with AMR-One at the 24 Hours of Le Mans , Aston Martin Racing returned to the Lola B09 / 60 later in the season. Adrián Fernández , Harold Primat and Stefan Mücke drove the car with starting number 007 in Road Atlanta .

The fastest practice time was achieved by Anthony Davidson, who drove a time of 1: 07.428 minutes in the Peugeot with the number 7 in qualifying. He was only a tenth of a second ahead of the best-placed Audi with Allan McNish at the wheel. On the circuit, which is only 4.088 kilometers long, the lap times of the fastest LMP1 cars were just over 1: 10,000 minutes, even in the race. With 52 vehicles started, this led to an abundance of laps, which helped to decide the race. Even in the early stages, Tom Kristensen had two collisions with slower GT cars in the Audi with the number 2 . The consequence of the first was a tire damage, the second the body was significantly damaged. Later in the race, the car stood for more than an hour to repair the clutch on the pits and fell far behind in the ranking. After driving 302 laps, the Audi race management withdrew the R18 TDI from the race for safety reasons. Peugeot lost a vehicle early on. After only 78 laps, the 908 with the number 7 had to be parked due to a gearbox damage.

The decision about overall victory was made in the seventh hour of the race. Romain Dumas in the number 1 Audi caught up with the leading Peugeot with Montagny at the wheel. When he tried to overtake the leader in heavy traffic, he collided with a GT car and crashed violently into the left lane. The car was so badly damaged that it had to be abandoned. The Audi team management accused Montagny of steering to the left during the overtaking process and thus forcing the Audi into the GT car. Head of Audi Motorsport Wolfgang Ullrich declared angrily: “Montagny will certainly never drive a works Audi.” Dumas also criticized his long-time friend after the event had ended. However, the race management saw no reason for an investigation. Repetitions of the television images and the evaluation of the telemetry data of the Peugeot relieved Montagny. He had neither slowed down nor left the racing line. There was also no contact between the Dumas Audi and the Peugeot. After the incident, the factory Peugeot won by a clear five laps over the Oreca-908 HDi FAP.
