Wolfgang Ullrich (born August 27, 1950 in Vienna , Austria ) is an Austrian engineer , former director at Audi Sport and consultant at ACO .

education

After graduating from high school, he studied automotive engineering in Vienna. He then worked in various companies in the automotive industry in the field of research and development. Ullrich is a doctor of technical sciences.

Sports boss at Audi

In 1993, Ullrich became head of the department for sports and special developments at Audi. In this role, he is responsible for many different projects at Audi Sport, including: a. for the Audi A4 Supertouring, the Le Mans prototype Audi R18 , the Audi RS5 DTM and the development of the diesel hybrid engine. From 2009 he was responsible for the development and expansion of customer racing with the Audi R8 LMS .

In August 2015, during the last lap of the DTM race at the Red Bull Ring , he instructed Timo Scheider over the radio to push championship- leading Mercedes driver Pascal Wehrlein off the track. Scheider followed this instruction. Ullrich was then denied access to the pit lane and active access to the pit radio for the remainder of the season, Scheider was banned for two races. Audi also received a fine of 200,000 euros and point deductions.

On January 1, 2017, the previous Head of Audi Motorsport Wolfgang Ullrich handed over the office to his successor Dieter Gass after 23 years . Ullrich himself remained with Audi in an advisory capacity until the end of 2017.

Consultant at the ACO

After retiring as head of sports at Audi, he has been working as a consultant for the organizer of the Le Mans 24 Hours, the French Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), since 2018 . In the new position created for him, he is to contribute to the further development of endurance racing around the Le Mans 24-hour race and the FIA World Endurance Championship and to support it with his experience in sport, marketing and technology.

He is married to his wife Antje and has a son. They live together in Oberstimm . In his spare time he does sports on his mountain bike , goes skiing or hiking.
