The Audi R8 LMS (internal R16) is a GT racing car based on the Audi R8 .

technology

The Audi R8 LMS is built according to the GT3 group regulations . A 5.2 liter V10 naturally aspirated engine, which is mounted in front of the rear axle, provides the drive. The direct injection engine develops 503 hp (370 kW) and has a maximum torque of 500 Newton meters. The power is transmitted to the rear axle via a 6-speed sports transmission with paddle shifters. The all-wheel drive installed as standard in the R8 has been replaced by rear-wheel drive due to the regulations .

history

Quattro GmbH's development work on the Audi R8 LMS began in January 2008 with the help of Abt Sportsline . The vehicle is intended for customer racing and is not used at the factory. In March 2009, the first of a total of twelve R8 LMS was delivered to Audi Sport Italia for development. The other R8 LMS went to Abt Sportsline, Argo Racing , ORECA , Team Phoenix and Team Rosberg . The vehicles come in the FIA GT3 European Championship , the ADAC GT Masters , the BFGoodrich Endurance Championship , the French GT Championship , the Belgian GT Championship and the Italian GT Championship used. With 14 victories, it is the most successful car in the ADAC GT Masters to date.

In autumn 2009 the free sale to motorsport teams started. The price was EUR 262,000 net.

24-hour race on the Nürburgring

As announced, Abt Sportline and Team Phoenix each fielded two R8 LMSs in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in 2009.

After several changes in leadership between two R8s and two Manthey-Porsches, four cars were in one lap up to the 19th hour, after which the vehicle of the Phoenix team of Frank Biela , Marcel Fässler , Emanuele Pirro and Hans-Joachim Stuck had technical problems. The sister car from Abt Sportsline, driven by Christian Abt , Jean-François Hemroulle , Pierre Kaffer and Lucas Luhr , came second. The other two cars also had problems, so Mattias Ekström , Timo Scheider and Marco Werner finished the race in 23rd place and Marc Basseng , Frank Stippler and Mike Rockenfeller finished fifth, six laps behind. In 2010 the number of R8 LMS was increased to seven. The teams Abt Sportsline, Phoenix and Black Falcon fielded the R8 in the race, Team Phoenix finished the race on the podium and as class winners.
