The Audi A3 (internal type designation 8Y , internal model designation AU380) is a compact class model and fourth generation of the A3 from Audi that has been available since 2020 . It follows the Audi A3 8V , which was offered from 2012.

Model history

Journalists were invited to test prototype vehicles on the island of São Miguel at the beginning of February 2020, about a month before the production model was presented . The manufacturer originally planned to present the vehicle model on March 3, 2020 at the Geneva Motor Show and to show it there for the first time in front of an audience. After major events in Switzerland, which include the Geneva Motor Show , were banned on February 28, 2020 due to concerns about the spread of the COVID-19 disease until March 15, 2020, the premiere had to be relocated. After all, the presentation of the previous generations on display took place in the special exhibition “Experience the Audi A3” in building A51 of the Audi Forum in Ingolstadt . A premiere video was broadcast online as a live stream. The notchback version of the vehicle was presented on April 21, 2020. Vehicles of the series have been delivered since July 2020. The sports model S3 was presented on August 11, 2020.

production

construction time

Production site

The vehicle with the five-door body is produced at the Audi plant in Ingolstadt. A new body shop for the model was built on the north site of the plant.

design

The design was created by exterior designer Phillipp Römers and head of design Marc Lichte . The fenders are more pronounced than on the A3 8V and have negatively sloping lines towards the doors. The front overhang has grown by approx. 35 mm, the rear slightly shorter. A separate light edge runs over the ironing door handles. The center console is angled slightly towards the driver. There is a third side window in the C-pillar.

Both the headlights and rear lights are horizontal. The front license plate can be mounted inside the Singleframe grille , and a recess is provided in the tailgate or trunk lid for the rear . Wheel air outlets are indicated on the rear bumper. The dashboard air outlets for the driver are pentagonal, arranged horizontally and at the level of the upper part of the hood of the instrument cluster; those for the front passenger, between the infotainment screen and the front passenger door, are connected with a metal strip. According to the manufacturer, the shape of the internal door opener should be reminiscent of a hockey stick.

technology

Like other vehicles from the Volkswagen Group , the vehicle is based on the further developed modular transverse matrix (MQB evo).

body

The five-door body of the station wagon variant of the vehicle (Sportback) is 4343 mm long, 1816 mm wide, 1449 mm high and has a 2636 mm wheelbase. The luggage compartment is accessible via a 671 mm (unloaded) high loading sill and has a capacity of 380 liters to 1200 liters. Depending on the engine variant, the empty weight of the vehicle is between 1255 kg and 1580 kg. The dimensions of the Audi S3 differ slightly from the Audi A3. The four-door notchback sedan differs in length at 4495 mm and in height at 1425 mm. Depending on the engine variant, it weighs up to 10 kg more than the station wagon. The loading sill (unloaded) of the 425 liter luggage compartment of the sedan is 688 mm high. About 29% by weight of the body-in-white is made from a composite of hot-formed steels. The hood is made of aluminum. The underbody of the vehicle is covered over a large area. The drag coefficient c W of the five-door is 0.28; for the four-door model, 0.25-0.27 is given. In the Audi S3, the luggage compartment volume has been reduced to 325 liters for the station wagon and 370 liters for the sedan.

drive

The vehicle was equipped with a 1.5 liter - line four-cylinder - Otto engine (35  TFSI ) with turbocharging and direct fuel injection , the maximum of 110 kW does presented. The diesel engine variants should have a turbocharged 2.0-l R4 engine with common rail injection in two stages with 85 kW (30  TDI ) and 110 kW (35 TDI) maximum output. The engine variants 35 TFSI and 30 TDI have a six-speed manual transmission as standard . The 35 TDI has seven-speed dual clutch transmissions with wet clutches (Audi designation: S tronic); since the end of March 2020, one has also been available for the 35 TFSI with dry clutches . In all three variants, the engine power is transferred to the front wheels . The 35 TFSI with dual clutch transmission, which was added in the month of presentation, has a 48-V electrical system for the mild hybrid drive , which supports the gasoline engine by means of a belt starter generator (RSG) in the start-up phase with a maximum of 9 kW of power and 50 Nm of torque. When braking, the RSG can recuperate up to 12 kW to the battery . In the first few months after the presentation, the manufacturer did not provide any precise information on other engines, but hybridized variants are also to be added. Versions with all-wheel drive (Audi designation: quattro drive ) are also to be added.

In May 2020, the 1.0-l R3 petrol engine with a maximum output of 81 kW was made available. The most powerful variant for which data from the manufacturer is available is (as of August 2020) the 2.0-l R4 gasoline engine of the S3, whose maximum output is 228 kW. It is the only motor that is connected to an all-wheel drive system to transfer the drive power to the ground. A seven-speed dual clutch transmission is used as the transmission.

landing gear

Underperforming engines have a torsion beam ; Models from 110 kW have a four-link rear axle with independent wheel suspension . The car has MacPherson struts with triangular wishbones on the front axle . The standard rim diameter of the wheels is 16 . Rim diameters up to 19 ″ are optionally available. Wheels of the Audi S3 have a rim diameter of 18 ″ as standard.

Internally ventilated brake discs with a diameter of 312 mm are installed on the front axle and 272 mm in diameter on the rear axle.

The vehicle has an electromechanical power steering with a standard gear ratio of 14.9: 1. For a surcharge (or standard in the Audi S3), there is a steering with a steering angle-dependent ratio (called by Audi: progressive steering ), in the middle position it has a ratio of 14.3: 1. 2.5 turns are required from stop to stop. Adaptive shock absorbers which can adopt three damping characteristics determined by the driver and which have an electromagnetic valve are also available. In one equipment line, a sports suspension is standard with which the body is lowered by 15 mm and in which the spring / damper combination is tighter.

safety

The vehicle dynamics control ESC has the additional software function "wheel-selective torque control" in which the wheels on the inside of the curve are braked slightly, thus increasing the torque on those on the outside of the curve. In conjunction with all-wheel drive, three modes can be set: from "ESC ON" with the lowest tire slip , a "Sport mode" for loose surfaces and "ESC OFF" in which the greatest amount of wheel slip is allowed. All input variables relating to transverse dynamics are recorded in a central unit (called by Audi: modular driving dynamics controller ) and the necessary output variables are output to the systems in the vehicle.

Furnishing

The vehicle model can be regularly configured in three equipment variants: Basic, advanced and S line. For the market launch, the “edition one” versions will also be available for the A3 and S3.

Exterior fittings

Depending on the equipment line, the trim on the body (bumper, rear wing, side skirts, ...) and wheels differ slightly. 13 wheel designs are available for the summer wheels and 3 designs for the winter wheels. Two plain paint finishes are available at no extra charge. There is an additional plain, eight metallic , one pearl effect and special paints available for a surcharge and not for every equipment variant .

The radiator grille has a honeycomb design in all equipment variants. The LED daytime running lights in the highest of three headlight variants (designated by Audi: Matrix LED headlights ) with 15 segments (3 × 5 light-emitting diodes ) in the trapezoidal lower part of the headlight varies in each case. Horizontal lines are displayed on the base model.

With the lowest of three headlight variants, all light functions are implemented with light-emitting diodes ( LED headlights ) except for the direction indicators . The taillights combined with the stage have incandescent lamps as light sources. The license plate is illuminated with LEDs. The middle gradation differs through a different daytime running light graphic with reversed "L" and LED indicators. The rear lights are also equipped with LEDs from the second stage. The two highest headlight versions have additional software functions compared to the basic version. In edition-one models, non-luminous parts of the headlights are darkened compared to the other models.

The Audi S3 differs from the Audi A3 in the slightly differently designed bumpers, larger series wheels and silver-colored contrasting elements on bumpers, sills and exterior mirror caps. The exhaust system with oval tailpipes is double-sided and each has two branches (in total: four branches) through the rear bumper. The Sportback station wagon has the same roof spoiler as the S-line equipment of the A3.

Larger roof edge spoilers for the estate car or a trunk lid spoiler for the notchback limousine made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic can be purchased as optional extras, with the exception of the S3 edition one as standard.

A panoramic glass sliding / lifting roof is available for an additional charge. For the hatchback version is available as optional a roof railing .

Interior

For the fabric seats, Audi offers three seat covers, the fibers of which are made from recycled PET bottles . For this purpose, up to 45 recycled 1.5-liter PET bottles are to be processed, which corresponds to a share of up to 89% of recyclate. 62 bottles are assumed for the carpet. Other interior components are also to be made from recycled raw materials . Fibers made from recycled PET have been used in the clothing industry since the mid-1990s. In vehicles with a dual clutch transmission, the selector lever is a short toggle switch that forwards signals electrically . Seats from the S-line range are also available with a headrest integrated into the seat .

Tire accessories

The standard equipment includes a puncture repair kit and on-board tools . A separate car jack or a spare wheel , for which the car jack is included in the surcharge, can be ordered as special equipment .

infotainment

For the infotainment system, the manufacturer uses an operating and display concept based on the third generation of the Volkswagen Group's modular infotainment kit (MIB). In conjunction with an audio system from Bang & Olufsen , which is available at an additional cost , the vehicle can be equipped with up to 15 speakers with a total output of 680 W. The instrument cluster is a 260 mm (10.25 ″) LC screen , which can also be 312 mm (12.3 ″) ( screen diagonal ) for a surcharge . The A3 8Y has a radio with receiver modules for VHF and DAB + as standard , the reception of internet-based radio costs extra. In contrast to the VW Golf VIII , whose interior climate is controlled via a touch-sensitive slider bar, the fourth generation of the Audi A3 has pushbuttons for operating the air conditioning. For communication with the environment or other vehicles, the model is equipped with Car2x technologies, which the magazine auto motor und sport assumes that they will not be usable at the start of sales due to a lack of infrastructure. In the center console, above the center tunnel, there is a sensory control panel the size of a 2 euro coin, which should enable the front passenger to control the audio system.

marketing

An international marketing campaign for the vehicle started in July 2020. The design and implementation was managed by Thjnk Hamburg and Gingco Communication. In Switzerland, three national languages are covered by the campaign. The media for advertising have been chosen both on social media and on television channels.
