The Audi 80 B2 ( Type 81 with front wheel drive or Type 85 with quattro - four-wheel drive called) is a vehicle of Audi NSU Auto Union AG (from 1985: Audi AG) and was in the late summer of 1978 as the second generation of the Audi 80 put on the market. It replaced the Audi 80 B1 .
The Coupé and the Quattro were derived from the Audi 80 B2. Both models were presented to the public in the spring of 1980.
The 80 B2 model series was replaced by the Audi 80 B3 (type 89) model series in the summer of 1986 .
Model history
General
The Audi 80 B2 was presented to the public in September 1978. This series of the Audi 80 was offered as a two- and four-door notchback sedan . The two-door was only delivered from spring 1979.
Compared to the previous model, the body has grown in size. In autumn 1978, the Ingolstadt-based company presented its completely redesigned two- and four-door mid-range sedans, which had grown significantly in all dimensions compared to their delicately proportioned predecessor: 16 centimeters in length to a total of 4.38 meters and a plus of seven centimeters in the wheelbase to 2.54 meters were a significant increase compared to their predecessor. The shape was first drawn by the designer Claus Luthe ; after his move from Audi to BMW , Giorgio Giugiaro's appearance was heavily revised. With a six-window sideline, the designers of the Audi 80 not only succeeded in creating a relationship to the larger Audi 100 models , but also creating a brand-defining recognition feature. The chassis with MacPherson struts and wishbones on the subframe at the front and rigid torsion crank axle at the rear, rack- and- pinion steering and hydraulically operated brakes ( disc brakes at the front, usually drum brakes at the rear ), basically remained the same.
In August 1980, a diesel model with a displacement of 1.6 liters was added to the range.
Like many vehicles from Audi and VW, the B2 was also offered as "Formula E" from February 1981. This energy-saving version had a standard five-speed gearbox with a long-geared fifth gear to reduce engine speed (called "4 + E gearbox") and a start-stop system with which the engine could be switched off at traffic lights, for example, by pressing a small button in the windshield wiper lever and which started again when the clutch and accelerator pedals were pressed. However, public interest in this variant fell short of expectations, although it consumed around one liter of fuel per 100 km less than the standard model. From 1982 the diesel model was optionally also available with an exhaust gas turbocharger.
In August 1981 the model range was reorganized. The Audi 80 CD with the 1.9 liter / 85 kW (115.6 hp) five-cylinder carburettor engine was added to the range as the most sophisticated model in the summer of 1981. Frame headrests front and rear, honeycomb velor fabric, height-adjustable driver's seat, 4 + electric gearbox, rev counter, rear center armrest, four-spoke leather steering wheel, headlight cleaning system, aluminum wheels, stainless steel covers on the bumpers, front spoilers in body color, matt-anodized rain gutters and moldings, stainless steel window strips were part of the CD window slot Package. The Audi 80 CD was only offered as a four-door sedan. From spring 1982 the Audi 80 CD was also offered as a 4-cylinder turbo diesel.
From February 1982 the Audi 80 Diesel was available with a turbocharger, the turbo diesel output was 51 kW (70 hp). As a special feature, this engine was also offered with CD equipment and also only had four doors.
After the Audi quattro presented in March 1980 , the Audi 80 quattro 5E with 100 kW (136 hp) that appeared in November 1982 was the second Audi with permanent all-wheel drive. Outwardly, it was adapted to the Audi Coupé B2 / Audi quattro. This model with the internal designation Type 85 was the first all-wheel drive sedan from Audi - in the course of the years every Audi model became optionally available with the quattro drive. However, the planned sales share of 30 percent was far from being achieved; only years later did this type of drive take up a significant share at Audi.
From February 1983 to March 1984 the GTE equipment variant was offered again. This time based on the 1.8 l with 82 kW (112 hp) and equipped with a five-speed gearbox. The Audi 80 GLE was omitted. In model year 83 only 3 colors were offered for the GTE, namely alpine white, Zermatt silver metallic and Montego black metallic. The doors in the lower third were given a decorative strip with the GTE lettering, the standard 13 "aluminum wheels were painted in alpine white, as were the Audi rings in the grill and the emblems on the rear.
Facelift
A facelift was carried out in August 1984 (at the same time for the Audi Coupé B2 ): There were wider bumpers and side strips, the front and rear sections were made more massive and the radiator grille and headlights beveled to reflect the family resemblance to the then new, aerodynamically efficient Audi 100 C3 to clarify. The now two-part taillights have been enlarged and thus also aligned with those of the Audi 100 C3; the loading sill was pulled down to the level of the bumper. The inner rear lights were thus built into the trunk lid.
In the interior, the dashboard and cockpit were modernized, new fabrics and color samples were introduced, and the model range was again reorganized. The 1.6 and 1.8 liter gasoline engines were renewed. Both 1.8-liter engines were offered with all-wheel drive in the quattro . Although they looked like a Type 81 , the Quattro models kept the designation Type 85 .
The Audi 80 CS was offered exclusively for the Netherlands from 1985. In the well-known engine variants 55 kW (75 PS) with four-speed or "4 + E" gearbox or 66 kW (90 PS) and 4 + E gearbox. In order to boost sales of the Audi 80 again, the interior of the Audi 80 GTE was offered in October 1985 for the models with 75 and 90 hp engines. At first there were six (Amazon blue metallic and Zermatt silver metallic), then from 1986 four exterior colors (tornado red, alpine white, stone gray metallic and graphite metallic). The standard equipment was the same as that of the GTE except for the additional instruments. Almost all engines for this model could be delivered from April 1986.
At the same time as the revision, the Audi 80 was accompanied by the Audi 90 sister model . The well-known five-cylinder engines were now reserved for these more luxuriously equipped, upgraded models, which were given, for example, higher-quality fabrics in the interior and stainless steel inserts in the bumper strips, as well as the broadband headlights as well as the bulky bumpers and sill panels of the Audi Coupé GT. The Audi 90 was also available as a quattro . The Audi 90 turbodiesel played a minor role in the market - it was the only Audi 90 model with a four-cylinder engine.
In August 1986 production of the B2 was discontinued in favor of its successor (internal Type 89 ).
Trivia
Due to initial delays in the start of series production, some vehicles from pre-series production were delivered to dealers as demonstration vehicles. They differed from the later production model by a different wiring harness and the use of some add-on parts (door handles etc.) and assemblies of the Audi 100 built at the time . In addition, almost all screw connections on these vehicles were carried out with hexagon socket screws .
All of these vehicles were painted in the color Inari silver metallic (silver green), which turned out to be significantly more yellow than the color of the same name of the later series models and thus more closely resembled the "Reseda green" metallic of the Audi 100 at that time, but was again somewhat bluish . Originally not intended for sale to end customers, some of these vehicles finally came onto the (used) market through employee sales. They were noticeable because of their rust protection, sometimes significantly better than the production model, but also because of permanent problems with the procurement of spare parts, electrical repairs and paintwork.
In the “Eberhoferkimi” series ( steamed noodle blues , winter potato dumplings , pork's head al dente , semolina dumplings and Leberkäsjunkie ) you can often see an Audi 80 B2 as a patrol car for the main actor Franz with special police equipment. Although there is no lack of it, Franz has to put up with malice for this youngtimer , the car is mocked as a “ Police Inspection 1 memory cart”.

Export models
The Audi 80 B2 was produced for the USA from March 1979 and sold under the name Audi 4000 in North America.
Special features are the engine range as well as the more luxurious equipment (corresponded to the equipment variant CD), which differs from the models produced for Europe, e.g. B. due to the stricter emissions standard for the United States and the buying behavior of customers in the North American market.
From spring 1983 this was also available as the Audi 4000 quattro.

Motorsport
Even before Audi was able to achieve great successes in rallying with the Audi quattro , the Audi 80 GLE was used in the Touring Cup across Europe from 1979 to 1981. In 1980 the private driver duo Hans-Joachim Nowak / Willi Bergmeister became European touring car champions.
