successor | Audi A4 B8 |
The third series B7 of the Audi A4 was delivered from the end of 2004 and officially assigned to the type 8E. The innovations were therefore often considered a facelift , even though the series internally bore the designation B7 because of the many technical and visual changes.
The B7 was marketed as the Audi A4 from November 2004 to March 2008. From spring 2009 to mid-2013, the B7 was available with a modified front, rear and interior design as the Seat Exeo (type designation 3R).
Changes compared to the predecessor
The body of the B7 was redesigned. The bumpers, headlights and rear lights have been changed. The most striking change was the single-frame grille , which this model wore for the first time in the mid-range Audi. The design of the interior, on the other hand, was identical to the previous model B6 , except for the modified steering wheel, the seats and the pointers of the speedometer instruments .
In addition to the chassis, steering and brakes, other safety devices were also renewed. The ESP from Bosch has been upgraded from version 5.7 to 8.0, which u. a. Fading compensation , dry braking in the rain and improved control in the event of understeer means. In addition, a new airbag system was installed (from 8.4 to 9.41), which has, among other things, a two-stage driver / front passenger airbag and seat occupancy detection. This means that airbags are only deployed when the seat is occupied and the gas filling is adapted to the impact speed.
The engine range was also updated (see Engines ) and a new 2-liter gasoline engine with turbocharging and direct gasoline injection was used, which developed 147 kW (200 hp). This engine replaced the most powerful 1.8-liter petrol engine of its predecessor and was later offered in two additional output levels. Two new 2-liter diesel engines with 103 and 125 kW (140 and 170 hp) replaced the most powerful four-cylinder diesel from the old series.
A newly developed 3.2-liter petrol engine and a 3-liter diesel engine were used in the six-cylinder engines, both of which had a maintenance-free camshaft drive through a timing chain . The V6 petrol engine with direct petrol injection developed 188 kW (255 hp) and replaced the two six-cylinder petrol engines from the old series. The new 3.0 TDI initially developed 150 kW (204 PS), later the output was increased to 171 kW (233 PS). The new V6 diesel with common rail injection worked more smoothly than its 2.5-liter counterpart with distributor injection pump from its predecessor, which was offered in the B7 for some time. The 2.5 TDI was later replaced by a 2.7-liter variant with 132 kW (180 PS) based on the new three-liter engine.
The list of standard and optional equipment remained almost unchanged. Only the optional adaptive light cornering light, which can be ordered in conjunction with xenon light (only from the 2004 facelift), the rain sensor and the automatically opening boot lid for the sedan were new to the equipment program.
Body styles
The sedan and station wagon were offered from the start. The convertible based on the B7 was presented about a year after the introduction of the sedan and Avant at the IAA 2005 and delivered from January 2006.
drive
The Audi A4 is equipped with front-wheel drive as standard . The quattro all-wheel drive system was available in conjunction with some engines . All-wheel drive was standard in the S / RS variants.
construction time
- Sedan : November 2004 to September 2007
- Kombi : November 2004 to March 2008
- Cabriolet : January 2006 to February 2009
By the end of June 2007, around 800,000 vehicles were produced by the B7, around half of which were made by the Avant.
Facelift
The B7 experienced only a few changes. Up until the end of 2005, the diesel engines could be equipped with a soot particle filter , known at Audi as a DPF (diesel particle filter), for an extra charge ; the filter has been standard since the beginning of 2006.
In addition to changes in the engine range, some details were changed from mid-2006. A new generation of radios was introduced that no longer offers a cassette deck , but differs from previous radios in terms of an MP3 playback function and a modified design. The "small" navigation system (BNS 5.0) is operated via the monochrome 6-inch screen of the new radio, which also displays the navigation instructions (previously this was only implemented via the instrument cluster ). The "large" navigation system (RNS-E) remained unchanged. In addition, the control switches above the radio were supplemented by a chrome strip and new headlights with white indicator glass were offered via the S line sports packages, which are subject to a surcharge . The last change is standard on the S and RS models. The cabriolet variants received the modified headlights in mid-2007.
At the beginning of 2007, Audi presented the 2.0 TFSI e model as part of the global warming debate . The e stands for economy and has
- a switching display in the speedometer instrument,
- a long translated sixth gear,
- a hood made of aluminum,
- Low-friction tires as well
- Aerodynamic add-on parts (referred to as S line exterior package ).
The 2-liter turbo engine, throttled to 125 kW (170 PS), should emit 169 g CO 2 / km (sedan) and 171 g CO 2 / km (Avant) through these measures .
The 1.9 TDI e model was available from mid-2007, which is equipped with a 6-speed gearbox compared to the normal variant and contains the above-mentioned changes to the TFSI e.
Model variants
The S4 variant was available with the introduction of this model and, like its predecessor, developed 253 kW (344 hp) in all three body variants .
The A4 DTM Edition appeared in mid-2005 and was only available as a sedan and with a 2.0-liter turbo engine with 162 kW (220 PS). The look reserved for this model was intended to be a reminder of Audi's success in the DTM .
From autumn 2005 the particularly sporty RS4 with 309 kW (420 PS) , which was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March, was available as a sedan at prices starting at around 69,900 euros. From mid-2006 this model was also offered as an Avant and Cabriolet. In addition to significantly more engine power, this variant had a slightly modified, sportier look.

Trivia
- For the first time in the history of the A4 series, a rain sensor is also offered with the B7 .
- Vehicles with xenon headlights are equipped with halogen daytime running lights as standard.
- The ellipsoid halogen headlights were replaced by headlights with reflector technology.
- In contrast to the predecessor B6, the diesel variants show their tailpipes again.
- Compared to the previous model, the S versions have four oval tailpipes.
- The B7 is 39 mm longer and 6 mm wider than the B6.
- As in the predecessor, the fuel tank holds 70 liters for models with front-wheel drive. The tank volume in quattro vehicles is 63 l.
- Tuning expert Alfons Hohenester set a world record with an A4 from this series powered by biogas on October 23, 2008. On the test track in Papenburg , the 528 hp (approx. 388 kW) vehicle reached a maximum speed of 327.2 km / h. The engine used was the 2.7-liter V6 engine with two turbochargers from the RS4 of the B5 series, which was drilled out to 3.0 liters for this application and optimized for operation with highly concentrated biogas. The world record run was initiated by the gas competence center of TÜV Rheinland .
- At the end of 2008, the production facilities were shipped to Martorell, Spain, with 1200 truckloads within eight weeks . There they were used until 2013 for the manufacture of the largely identical Seat Exeo .
