The idea of this model series, based on the Audi 80 B2 Type 81/85, which was revised in August 1984, was to offer a sporty, exclusive model between the Audi 80 B2 and the significantly larger Audi 100 C3 , in order to stand up to the 3-series BMW and the Mercedes 190 Offer.

Among many used body parts of Audi Coupe GT, the Audi 90 is also 80. The main external differences from the Audi 80 were from different by more powerful engines and better equipment from the Audi thermoplastic made bumpers, broadband headlights, fitted into the bumper turn signals and fog lights, geklipste side skirts , Nirosta trim strips on the bumpers and in the door protection strips as well as an orange-red center panel at the rear, similar to that of the Audi 200.

In contrast to the Audi 80, the Audi 90 was only delivered with five-cylinder in-line engines. An exception, however, is the rare four-cylinder turbodiesel with 1.6 liter displacement and 51 kW (70 hp). Right from the start, the 90s was available either with front-wheel drive (type 81) or with quattro drive (type 85, only with 2.2-l engine). From the 1985 model year, the 2.2-liter engine was also supplied with a regulated catalytic converter for unleaded petrol. The 2.0-l engine was only available for unleaded petrol from 1986 and only with an unregulated catalytic converter.

Another novelty of the Audi 90 was the availability of ABS (only for 2.2 l engine) for an extra charge of 3725  DM . A power steering belonged in 2.2-liter engine as standard. Other options included electric windows, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors and a sunroof, as well as a headlight cleaning system, air conditioning and cruise control ( cruise control ).

End of production

After the facelift of the Audi 80 B3 in late summer 1991 and the subsequent introduction of the Audi 80 B4 in Europe, the Audi 90 was no longer offered under this model name; Regardless of the engine and equipment, all Audi mid-range models were only available as the “Audi 80”. As with the Audi 200 C3, which was also discontinued, the principle of “one model series, two model names” was thus abandoned.

Export models

Audi 90 B4 in US specification

The export models of the Audi 90 Type 81/85 to North America were designated as the Audi 4000 CS (Audi 80: Audi 4000). Externally, these differed from the Audi 90 models intended for Europe in that they had changed headlights and bulky bumpers.

The name “Audi 90” was only introduced in North America from Type 89 onwards.

The name Audi 90 was continued in North America for the Audi 80 B4 model until the model series was replaced by the Audi A4 in 1994 . Characteristic of the US version of the B4 are, among other things, modified bumpers, orange turn signal glasses at the front and a considerably expanded basic equipment compared to the vehicles intended for the German market. In the USA, the B4 was only offered with the V6 engines that were current at the time.
