The Audi S2 is a vehicle from the manufacturer Audi . It was built between autumn 1990 and the end of 1995 as a sedan , avant and coupé in a total of 9,488 copies.
The Coupé S2 is the official successor to the Audi quattro .
The name was derived from the Audi Sport quattro S1 / E2 rally vehicle . The S2 is equipped with quattro permanent all-wheel drive as standard .
Coupé S2
The Coupé S2 was developed in collaboration with Konrad Schmidt Motorsport GmbH , with whom the Audi V8 quattro DTM competed in the German Touring Car Championship in 1990, and was launched on the market in September 1990 at a base price of 72,450 DM. It is based on the Audi Coupé B3 and is the top model in this series. As this, it should also improve the image of the B3 Coupé, which to date has been selling significantly less than its predecessor, the Audi Coupé B2 . The production of the Audi Coupé S2 was stopped in December 1995 after 7370 vehicles were produced.
Avant S2 / Audi S2
The Audi Avant S2 came onto the market in February 1993 at a base price of 79,150 DM. This was followed in July 1993 by the sedan, which was sold under the name Audi S2 from DM 76,650. Both are based on the Audi 80 B4 . The Avant S2 was built a total of 1812 times between 1993 and 1995. In 1993 and 1994, only 306 limousines left the factory. In 1995 the sedan was no longer built. Production of the Avant S2 ended together with that of the Audi 80 B4 in 1995.
body
The body of the Coupé S2 is largely based on that of the Coupé B3. The front section was redesigned with a bonnet with an integrated radiator grille, which similarly made its debut in the Audi V8 . In 1990, the S2 Coupé already anticipated the look of the new Audi 80 B4 , which came onto the market in 1991. Sedan and Avant are optically based on their standard versions of the Audi 80 B4. All S2 versions received a front apron with an integrated front spoiler and a slightly redesigned rear apron. The S2 emblems on the front grille and on the rear of the vehicle also identify the S2.
Furnishing
The standard equipment includes the Procon-ten security system and ABS , a headlamp cleaning system, central locking and electric windows. Sports seats and a three-spoke sports steering wheel with an integrated S2 emblem are installed inside. In addition, there are three additional instruments in the center console, on which the oil temperature, oil pressure and the on-board voltage can be read. These instruments had a light gray background on the Audi S2.
engine
The engine of the Coupé S2 ( MKB : 3B) is derived from the engine of the last Audi quattro 20V built (MKB: RR) and was also installed in the Audi 200 quattro 20V. It initially developed 162 kW (220 hp). However, due to the space available in the B3 Coupé body, the engine peripherals had to be adapted. The intake and exhaust tracts were redeveloped and the air routing of the oil cooler was changed. The vehicle is equipped with two lambda probe- controlled catalytic converters and thus complies with the Euro 1 emissions standard . Furthermore, the fully electronic engine management system automatically adapts to the operating conditions during the entire engine life.
In 1992 the Coupé S2 was subjected to a facelift. So the engine (MKB: ABY) (derived from the AAN engine from the Audi S4) was used. This has an output of 169 kW (230 hp) and a torque of 350 Nm. For a short time there is a torque of 380 Nm with an overboost function. In addition, the ignition system (single ignition) and the boost pressure control differ from the previously used engine. The five-speed manual transmission was replaced by a six-speed manual transmission, in which the last gear is no longer translated than that of the five-speed derivative. Avant and sedan have also been using this engine since it was launched in 1993.
The ABY engine is a revised version of the 3B engine. The trunk engine has generally remained the same. In addition to the lack of overboost of the ABY, the 3B has a mechanical ignition distributor (ABY: individual ignition) and the underbody was adapted for the catalytic converters, which meant that the driver's seat had to be changed.
