The Audi A6 C7 (internal type designation 4G) is an upper middle class passenger car from Audi and was offered as the fourth generation of the Audi A6 .
At the 88th Geneva Motor Show in March 2018, Audi presented the successor model to the sedan with the A6 C8 . The A6 C8 Avant was presented in autumn 2018.
Model history
idea
The vehicle was officially unveiled on December 1, 2010, had its formal public premiere at the 2011 NAIAS (North American International Auto Show) and went on sale on April 1, 2011.
Production and launch
The vehicle was produced in Neckarsulm, among others . The Audi A6L long version, on the other hand, is produced in the FAW-Volkswagen plant in Changchun specifically for the Chinese market . CKD assembly of the A6 takes place in the Aurangabad , Jakarta (Cakung) and Monterrey plants .
The sedan came on the market in April 2011 . The wagon version Avant followed in September 2011. As with the previous two generations A6 is also thereof again a variant with off-road look called A6 allroad quattro offers produced since the beginning of the 2012th At the same time, the production of a hybrid variant began.
General
The Audi A6 C7 differs from its predecessor, the C6 , in that the platform has been changed. Like the Audi A4, B8 , A5 and A7 Sportback before , the C7 is based on Audi's “ modular longitudinal construction kit ” (MLB). By swapping the place for the clutch and differential, the front axle moves about 12 cm forward, which gives the vehicle a longer wheelbase and alleviates the top-heaviness inherent in the principle due to the front engine and front-wheel drive installed lengthways in front of the front axle.
In addition, Audi has announced a weight reduction of up to 70 kg through the use of aluminum add-on parts and the use of high-strength and high-strength steels in the structure. Audi is equipping the A6 C7 with an automatic start-stop system as standard , brake energy recovery , active thermal management and revised engines, which should reduce fuel consumption by up to 19 percent. In addition, the A6 inherits the Audi MMI infotainment system from the Audi A7, which features a retractable display and handwriting recognition.
Facelift
In October 2014 the A6 series underwent a facelift.
This can be recognized by the modified headlights (optional matrix LED headlights), modified radiator grille, other bumpers and sills as well as revised tail lights, Audi MMI with Tegra 3 processor and LTE internet access.
In addition, almost the entire range of engines has been technically optimized in terms of performance and fuel consumption. The 2.0 TFSI now delivers 185 kW (252 hp) instead of 132 kW (180 hp) and its six-speed gearbox has been replaced by the S tronic with seven gears. The 150 kW (204 PS) 2.8 FSI was discontinued without replacement. What is new, however, is the 1.8 TFSI petrol engine with 140 kW (190 PS) and various versions of the 3.0 TDI clean diesel engine, whose output levels range from 160 kW (218 PS) to 240 kW (326 PS).
Exhaust scandal
In the course of the exhaust gas scandal in the automotive industry, which has been ongoing since September 2015, several illegal shutdown devices were discovered in various engines of the Audi A6 C7 with V6 diesel engine , which reduce or completely switch off the exhaust gas treatment in road operation. These include, among other things, a special pollutant-reducing "heating strategy" that is almost only active on the test bench, as well as a reduction in exhaust gas aftertreatment when the auxiliary tank of the necessary AUS 32 urea solution is emptied . By not injecting urea, the SCR catalytic converter does not work or works to an extremely limited extent, as a result of which the exhaust gas nitrogen dioxide escapes unhindered in high concentrations. For these reasons, production of the A6 was stopped in May 2018.

Engines
To enter the market, the Audi A6 was initially available with four V6 engines, followed in the spring by the revised 2.0 TDI basic diesel engine with a maximum output of 130 kW (177 hp). Since December 2011 there has also been a 3.0 TDI version with a maximum output of 230 kW (313 PS) and a maximum torque of 650 Nm.
A hybrid version with 6.2 l / 100 km has been available since the beginning of 2012 . The sport version S6 was presented at the IAA 2011, the RS6 followed in February 2013.
In the USA, instead of the 2.8 FSI, a 2.0 TFSI with a maximum output of 155 kW (211 PS) and a maximum torque of 350 Nm in combination with the continuously variable automatic transmission “Multitronic” and front-wheel drive or the 8-speed automatic transmission “tiptronic” and all-wheel drive offered. The 2.0 TFSI quattro tiptronic is also available in Canada. For the Chinese long version there is also a 2.5-liter V6 petrol engine with a maximum output of 140 kW (190 hp) in conjunction with the continuously variable “Multitronic” automatic transmission.

Hybrid
As a full hybrid, the Audi A6 hybrid is capable of speeds of up to 100 km / h and max. 3 km at 60 km / h purely electrically. This is made possible by a 1.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. Thanks to the hybrid drive batteries housed in the trunk, the trunk volume is only 320 liters, 100 liters less than the normal sedan. If the rear seat back is folded down, the trunk increases to 670 liters.
For the Chinese market, Audi also offers the A6L 40 e-tron as a plug-in hybrid. It is produced by FAW-Volkswagen in the Changchun plant. Its 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery offers an electric range of approx. 50 km.
Both versions are only available as a sedan.
