The Audi A6 C4 is an upper middle class vehicle from Audi . It came onto the market in mid-1994 as the successor and facelift of the Audi 100 C4 . This makes it the first model in the model series after the Audi 100 was renamed to A6 . The corresponding sports version was renamed from S4 to S6 .

Model history

General

The factory designation "4A - C4" for the fourth generation of this series was continued to be used on the Audi A6, as it is not a technical new development, but actually just a facelift. The Audi 100 C4 appears in its revised form modified in various details and was delivered as the Audi A6 from June 1994. The basic technical layout is identical to the previous model. In this form he could be appointed until October 1997. Like the predecessor models, the A6 C4 has the fully galvanized body introduced in 1985, is equipped with four, five, six and eight-cylinder engines and offers the Quattro all-wheel drive system in selected engine and equipment variants. The successor model is the completely newly developed Audi A6 C5 .

The most noticeable change compared to its predecessor, the Audi 100 C4, is, in addition to numerous modifications to the design, the introduction of the most powerful diesel engine to date in an Audi. It is an in-line five-cylinder with direct injection, distributor injection pump, turbocharging (bypass turbocharger), air mass meter, electronically controlled exhaust gas recirculation and exhaust gas cleaning using a catalytic converter. This unit has an output of 103 kW (140 PS) and is technically a further development of the 84 kW engine from the Audi 100. With this drive, an Audi diesel car with standard equipment exceeds the 200 km / h mark for the first time. This engine could be ordered with an automatic transmission or, for the first time, a manual transmission with six forward gears on a diesel vehicle. This engine variant was also available in the Quattro version.

Externally visible changes to the model sold as the A6 compared to the Audi 100 are changed bumpers (without black plastic strips that appear attached), now painted in the color of the vehicle, and side strips on the doors / fenders that are also in the same color as the exterior paintwork, which have a strong visual effect take back and give the vehicle a completely new, clearly structured overall character. In addition, the front and rear have been revised and visually adapted to the new Audi developments A4 and A8, which were also introduced in 1994. The right wing mirror is now slightly smaller than the left, this reduces the frontal area (and indirectly the drag coefficient). In addition, many of the simpler model versions already have equipment details that were previously only offered in the higher-quality versions of the Audi 100. As with the A4 and A8, the odometer and trip meter are now made using LCD technology. A higher quality version of the plastic surfaces of the interior creates a higher quality impression. The seats appear higher-quality and slightly lower than on the Audi 100, the frame construction of the headrests, which Audi introduced in 1980 with the Audi 200 C2 model, has been abandoned and replaced by a new, more delicate design. The headlights are now exclusively equipped with DE technology for the low beam and fog lights, and there is also a move away from the two-thread halogen technology; a discharge lamp for low beam (xenon) is now also available in some selected models with smaller engines, standard driver and passenger airbags, they replace procon-ten.

In March 1996, towards the end of the construction period, Audi presented the Audi S6 (C4) with another sport version of the A6: the Audi S6 Plus , exclusively with a powerful 4.2-liter V8 engine. The normal S6 was available either with a 2.2-liter five-cylinder engine with 4 valves per cylinder and turbocharging or with a V eight-cylinder (also with 4 valves per cylinder) that developed 213 kW (290 hp). The S6 plus was manufactured as a sedan and station wagon (Avant) by quattro GmbH at the Neckarsulm plant . Both body variants shared the 4.2 V8 engine from the S6; its performance grew partly through the use of a modified map in the engine management, partly through the use of classic engine tuning to 240 kW (326 hp). From S6 plus just 97 sedans and station wagons were built 855 to 1997th Allegedly there are currently not even 20 registered limousines in Germany.

In the Audi A6 / S6, a very precise product cycle control was implemented for the first time via the defined corrosion of individual body parts. Building on this, Audi was able to grant a twelve-year guarantee against rust perforation, which, however, was associated with various conditions (meticulous maintenance of service intervals).

In the People's Republic of China, FAW-Volkswagen produced the Audi A6 C4 from 1998 to 2003 as the successor to the Audi 200 Lang .
