The Audi Coupé B2 is a sports coupé from the vehicle manufacturer Audi, which was produced from summer 1980 to autumn 1987. The coupé is based on the Audi 80 B2 (type 81 or 85), which came on the market in September 1978. It was presented in Paris in March 1980. The Audi quattro was based on the coupé of this series.

Model history

General

Rear view

After it was presented at the Paris Salon in March 1980, production of the Audi Coupé began in August 1980, and from October the Audi Coupé was available from dealers. The body of the Audi Coupé resembles that of the Audi 80 up to the belt line, the front does not differ up to the A-pillar except in the headlights.

Above the belt line, the coupé has a flatter front window and flatter side windows than the Audi 80 and a hatchback with a small tailgate. A striking feature are the tall, narrow taillights, between which there is a black, fluted cover. A continuous, red light strip (with the "Coupe" lettering on the background) runs underneath this panel, similar to the older models of the Porsche 911 . It was available as a “GT” with five-cylinder engines or as a “GL” with the well-known four-cylinder engines from the Audi 80 B2.

The rectangular double headlights have a border made of chrome-plated trims, similar to those of the Audi 200 C2 , the indicators and the fog lights (available at an additional cost) are integrated into the bumper. Generously dimensioned ventilation grilles are embedded in the C-pillar. With the exception of the 1.6 l (later 1.8 l) 75 hp four-cylinder coupe, all models had a flat, black plastic rear spoiler as standard; the early models were made of PUR foam, later hollow. The Coupé GL with the new 1.8 l 90 hp engine from 1982 onwards also has this spoiler.

From autumn 1982 there were new, better shining headlights with two reflectors under a common, vertical glass. A new central electrical system from the Audi 100 Type 44 with a locking plate was also installed in the plenum chamber. In August 1983 the econometer in the dashboard of the Audi was replaced by a cooling water temperature display.

In the first years of construction, the coupés in GT equipment were basically offered in two colors, with the body covered all around below the bumpers / side protection strips with a film one shade darker (example white / gray). The basic models (GL), on the other hand, were normally monochrome, the 75 PS model was delivered from the factory without a front spoiler.

The second and more extensive facelift took place during the factory holidays in August 1984. The two bumpers and the side strips were modified, two-piece sill covers made of plastic were installed, the front and rear sections were made more massive and the radiator grille and headlight glasses beveled to emphasize the family resemblance to the aerodynamic Audi 100/200 C3 ( Type 44 ). The taillights and the continuous light strip were now colored black. The rear spoiler has now been adopted from the quattro - initially in black, in later models in the body color. In the interior, the dashboard and cockpit have been modernized with new fabrics and color patterns. The two-tone design of the GT models was omitted.

The “Coupé GL” (with four-cylinder engine) remained in the program and was now simply referred to as the “Audi Coupé”. It only differed in details from the five-cylinder models. Inside, a modified speedometer cover and the velor seats from the Audi 80 were used, but the sports seats known from the GT were available for an extra charge. The GT interior was installed in the four-cylinder special model "Audi Coupé Exclusive" launched in 1986, and from the 1987 model year the Audi Coupé with four-cylinder engines was upgraded to the Audi Coupé GT.

From the end of 1984 the coupé was available for an extra charge with the all-wheel drive familiar from the quattro , after Audi announced that it would also be offering all models as "quattro" versions at the end of 1984 . This model was sold as the "Audi Coupé quattro".

Facelift

  • 05/1981: A 1.6-liter carburettor engine with 75 HP and GL equipment is available from May to August 1981.
  • 08/1981: New 1.8 l engine with 75 hp
  • 03/1982: A 130 hp 2.2-liter injection engine with standard power steering and 14-inch aluminum rims completes the range.
  • 09/1982: A 1.8 l, 90 hp carburettor engine with four-cylinder and modified headlights is introduced, new central electrics.
  • 06/1983: Special model 130 PS with leather interior in beige, referred to by enthusiasts as the "Gold Edition"
  • 09/1983: The 1.9-liter carburetor engine 5S is replaced by an equally powerful 5E injection engine with 2.0 liters.
  • 08/1984: The coupé is subject to a facelift. The modifications include slightly inclined headlights, black taillights, more voluminous bumpers painted in body color, larger rear spoiler, modified interior and a revised dashboard.

  • 08/1986: The four-cylinder models also become the Audi Coupé GT with the appropriate equipment. The four-cylinder injection engine with 112 hp (with G-KAT 110 hp), which replaces the 2.0-liter 5-cylinder, is new.
  • 10/1987: Production is stopped.

In the 1981 season, Audi dealer Willi Bergmeister entered an Audi Coupé in the European Touring Car Championship and was able to win the race in Zolder. The car was built according to the Group 2 regulations in force at the time. The engine developed 225 hp. This enabled it to reach a top speed of around 245 km / h. Today the car is owned by Audi AG.

In the 2011 season, Andreas Fürst fielded a newly built Audi Coupe in the German Autocross Championship .
