Econometer

An econometer (from English economic "economic" and ancient Greek μέτρον métron " measure , measure") is a measuring device for displaying the consumption status of a vehicle or a system . The displayed value corresponds to a physical quantity that allows an assessment of the current energy consumption and power output. Conclusions about the degree of efficiency are only possible to a limited extent.

Operating principles

Different types of econometers are distinguished depending on the area of ​​application:

Motor vehicles

In motor vehicles with carburetor engines , the econometer is controlled by the negative pressure downstream of the throttle valve (pointer instrument). When the throttle valve is open (full load), the pressure difference is high, the value displayed on the econometer is in the upper range (e.g. red scale segment). At full throttle, the consumption is high and the driver should be encouraged to an economical (economical) driving style. With the increasing use of engines with manifold injection and their electronic control , the econometer in motor vehicles was replaced by the on-board computer .

In electric vehicles or hybrid electric vehicles , econometers are provided to display the operating status. This tells the driver whether the batteries are currently being charged ( regenerative braking ) or whether drive energy is being used.

Usually the econometer is built into the dashboard , sometimes integrated into the speedometer .

In shipping , the econometer provides information on the current and totalized power / consumption ratio. A flow sensor is installed in the fuel line for this purpose. Its measurement results and data on speed, distance covered, etc. provide an overview of the efficiency of the driving status.

In large diesel engines, such as marine diesel engines , econometers are used to measure fuel consumption, with the sulfur content in heavy fuel oil being used as an indicator. The concentration of sulfur compounds in the exhaust gas allows the current fuel consumption to be determined. A flame photometric detector is used for the measurement.

Power plant technology

In power plant technology , econometers are used to monitor the operating status by measuring the carbon dioxide content in the exhaust gas flow.
