The Audi R8 (internal model designation 4S or series code FX in FIN ) has since 2015 sold second-generation mid-engine - sports car R8 from Audi.
Model history
The vehicle was officially presented to the public at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show . The vehicle has been delivered since summer 2015 and was awarded the Golden Steering Wheel in the sports car class in the same year . On March 23, 2016, Audi presented the convertible version (Spyder), which appeared in the second half of 2016, at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS).
By October 2016, the R8 e-Tron, a battery-electric model with two electric motors, was built in small series.
As part of the International Motor Show (IAA) in September 2017 in Frankfurt am Main , Audi presented the R8 RWS (Rear Wheel Series) as a limited-production special model with rear-wheel drive .
On October 18, 2018, a revised version of the R8 was presented.
On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the V10 engine in the Audi R8, the special model R8 V10 Decennium , limited to 222 units , was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019 . It is only available as a coupe.
At the annual Audi general meeting 2019, Abraham Schot , CEO of Audi , announced that no successor was planned for the Audi R8. Schot's justification was that the company wanted to make Audi more profitable and valuable, and also to concentrate resources on key projects.
Technology and equipment
The second R8 has the same platform as the Lamborghini Huracán, which has been in production since 2014 . The R8 is built in the new Audi Sport plant in Heilbronn's industrial area Böllinger Höfe. In addition to a newly designed front and rear, the body has become more angular and angular compared to its predecessor.
body
According to the manufacturer, the vehicle weight could be reduced by 50 kg and the rigidity increased by 40%. The vehicle has LED headlights as standard. Optionally, a laser high beam can be ordered that doubles the light range of the LED headlight in high beam mode. The V10 plus variant is equipped with a rear spoiler as standard.
drive
A further developed 5.2-liter V10 mid-engine is available as an engine in two power variants, each with a maximum of 397 kW (540 PS) and a maximum of 449 kW (610 PS) for the R8 V10 plus .
As new features of the naturally aspirated engine in addition to a combined has intake manifold and direct fuel injection and a cylinder deactivation , the one cylinder bank shuts down if necessary completely. The R8 is supplied with a stop-start system as standard . The transmission is a seven-speed dual clutch transmission (S tronic) with sailing function as a technical innovation; a manual transmission is no longer available.
inner space
As in the Lamborghini Huracán and Audi TT FV , the redesigned interior has the virtual cockpit . The instrument cluster and infotainment system on the driver's side are combined in a 12.3-inch LC display. In addition to showing speed, engine speed and temperatures, this display can also show other vehicle parameters, media and navigation information. The system is operated using the MMI rotary knob in the center console or the multifunction steering wheel. Air conditioning, seat and other heaters are operated via switches and controls on the dashboard.
Facelift
Audi has been offering a facelift of the sports car since February 2019. Mainly the bumpers were visually revised. At the front, the radiator grille was made wider and its height reduced. There are now decorative air inlets on the side of the headlights. Three elongated decorative air inlets have also been added between the radiator grille and the bonnet, reminiscent of the Sport quattro . The side air inlets of the front apron and the front splitter have also been changed. At the rear, the main changes are that the ventilation grille is now continuous and, like the first generation, oval tailpipes are used. With the facelift, the exterior colors "Kemora gray" and "Ascari blue" were added to the range. In addition, a “titanium gray” exterior package can now be selected.
Three new color combinations have been added for the interior:
- “Pastel silver” with “rock gray” stitching
- “Palomino brown” with “steel gray” seams
- Black with “utopia blue” stitching
Some technical changes have also been made. The steering ( electromechanical rack and pinion power steering ) has been retuned. Optionally, the 2 kg lighter, CFRP- reinforced stabilizer with aluminum mount from the R8 LMS motorsport version can now be selected on the front axle . Forged wheels made of light metal with a rim diameter of 20 inches are also optionally available. The facelift also increases the power and torque values of both engine variants.
variants
R8 e-tron
The R8 e-Tron built until October 2016 has two electric motors . These deliver a total output of 340 kW (462 hp) and have a torque of 920 Nm. The purely electrically powered model has a range of up to 450 kilometers. Less than 100 vehicles were produced for a purchase price of 1 million euros.
R8 V10 RWS
As part of the IAA in Frankfurt am Main in September 2017 , Audi presented the R8 as a special RWS (Rear Wheel Series) model. In contrast to the equally powerful V10 5.2 , the RWS limited to 999 units has rear-wheel drive , which reduces the curb weight by 40 kilograms to 1590 kilograms. The acceleration time from 0 to 100 km / h increases by 0.2 seconds to 3.7 seconds, and the top speed is still 320 km / h. The R8 V10 RWS is the first production vehicle from Audi to have rear-wheel drive.
Motorsport
Audi also offers a GT3 and a GT4 variant, which can be used in customer racing.
At the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2019, the R8 LMS GT2 was presented, which will, among other things, start in the GT2 class planned by the SRO for 2020 .
