The first generation of the SQ5 came on the market in September 2012. It is manufactured in Ingolstadt and, like the Audi Q5 8R , is based on Audi's modular longitudinal construction kit (MLB) . The S variant of the Audi Q5 is the first S model with a diesel engine on the European market. The 3.0 TDI is also available in the Audi A6 C7 and A7 C7 , has 230 kW (313 hp) and is charged via two turbo units connected in parallel. The SQ5 has the same rating in the Euro NCAP crash test as the Q5.
SQ5 TDI plus
Audi has extended the standard "gloss package black" to include the exterior mirror housings, door handles, the roof spoiler and diffuser. Another optical customization of the exterior is a clip that connects the four tailpipes of the exhaust system in pairs. In the interior, the sliding rear bench increases the variability and enlarges the luggage space if necessary. The armrests in the door panels are covered with leather. The seats in “Fine Nappa leather” have silver diamond quilting covers.
In addition to these features, the Audi subsidiary quattro GmbH has launched a special equipment package "Audi exclusive selection arab blue" limited to 100 units for the SQ5 TDI plus: the body is painted in the so-called individual color "arab blue crystal effect" and the interior has sports seats black “fine Nappa leather”. The seats, the steering wheel, the selector lever gaiter and the floor mats are matched to the exterior color with “Arabic blue” contrasting stitching. In addition, inlays made of "aluminum / Beaufort black wood" are installed. The equipment package could be ordered from the market launch at a price of 8670 euros in the SQ5 TDI plus.

In January 2017, Audi presented the second generation of the SQ5 at NAIAS. This is based on the Audi Q5 FY and will be built together with it in a newly built plant in Mexico. The SQ5 takes over the drive from the S4 B9 and was first available in Europe with a gasoline engine. In June 2017 he came to dealers in Germany. In the summer of 2019, a diesel replaced the gasoline engine that had already expired in spring 2018.
