Based on the second series B6 (Type 8E) of the Audi A4 , in addition to the sedan and the station wagon , a convertible for the middle class was offered for the first time after the Audi Cabriolet built from 1991 to 1997 (Type 8H). It replaced the A4 B5 in November 2000 . In November 2004 the A4 B7 replaced it in Germany .

Changes compared to the predecessor

The second generation of the A4 differs from its predecessor, the B5, by the raised side belt line and a more rounded rear end. The body is therefore similar to the larger Audi A6 . The B6 is 69 mm longer, 33 mm wider and 13 mm higher than its predecessor.

The further developed four-link front axle consists largely of aluminum. This makes it 8.5 kg lighter than the first A4 generation.

While the predecessor was equipped with a twist - beam ( front-wheel drive ) or double-wishbone rear axle ( quattro drive ), the B6 has a new double-wishbone rear axle with independent suspension , separate springs and dampers and better directional stability in both drive variants.

In addition to some of the engines known from the old series, the B6 has two newly developed gasoline engines:

  • An in- line four-cylinder with a displacement of two liters and 96 kW (130 PS) as well
  • a six-cylinder V-engine with a displacement of three liters and 162 kW (220 hp).

The engine blocks of both engines are made of aluminum; they have five valves per cylinder.

With the B6, the continuously variable automatic Multitronic for vehicles with front-wheel drive was offered for the first time in the A4 . Models with all-wheel drive, on the other hand, can only be equipped with a five-stage automatic converter " Tiptronic ". In contrast to its predecessor, this has an additional switch position "S", which is intended to convey a sporty shift behavior and driving experience. The previous gear positions are no longer required, but can still be selected separately using the "shift gate".

The following have also been improved and further developed:

  • the crash properties,
  • ESP and ABS ,
  • the braking system,
  • the noise insulation,
  • the body stiffness (45% higher than the B5 ),
  • the standard and optional equipment.

The B6 is z. B. equipped with the sideguard head airbag system as standard . In the previous model, these additional airbags were only offered at an additional cost.

Body styles

Like its predecessor, the successor B6 is also available as a sedan (four doors) and station wagon (five doors).

The construction times between B5 and B6 overlap because the Avant variant of the predecessor was introduced a year later and was also produced a year longer than the sedan of the comparable construction period.

Audi A4 B6 Cabriolet (Type 8H)

Audi A4 Cabriolet in Caribbean blue, pearl effect with pearl nappa leather, light gray

With the introduction of the Audi A4 Cabriolet in April 2002, a four-seater convertible again added to the Audi product range and thus filled the gap that the Audi 80- based Audi Cabriolet left when it was discontinued in 2000. Comparable competitors at the time were the BMW 3 Series Cabriolet , the Mercedes CLK Cabriolet and the Saab 93 Cabriolet . In contrast to the models of the other competitors mentioned, the A4 Cabriolet was the first convertible to have the optional Quattro all-wheel drive and the continuously variable Multitronic automatic as a unique feature.

Body outside

Like the predecessor vehicle, the A4 convertible was also produced by the Lower Saxon coachbuilder Karmann ( Osnabrück ) in Rheine , North Rhine-Westphalia . Based on the Audi Cabriolet, some typical design and equipment features have been adopted. This includes the all-round silver windscreen frame made of aluminum, which continues in the window line and closes on the convertible top compartment below the rear window and is still typical of all four-seater Audi convertibles today (cf. A3 , A5 ). A soft top was also used again, which can now be opened electro-hydraulically and fully automatically at the touch of a button within 24 seconds as standard without the need for manual unlocking and which is completely stowed under the automatic convertible top flap. The convertible top can only be operated when the vehicle is stationary or up to a maximum of 5 km / h.

In its model history, the A4 Cabriolet is the forerunner of the Audi A5 series, as it differed from the A4 in terms of both visual and technical properties. It bears the same name, but apart from the technical platform, it has little in common with its eponymous series.

The Audi A4 Cabriolet is largely an independent model, as all body parts, with the exception of the exterior mirrors, have their own design and no add-on parts from the sedan or station wagon have been adopted, which also includes the changed internal type designation (8H instead of 8E) and production an external commissioned work (Karmann Osnabrück). The 450 kg bodyshell was joined with 6250 spot welds and, from a technical point of view, used the engines, transmissions and drive variants in part from the range of the Audi A4; However, the set-up of the aluminum chassis was changed due to the higher weight and the performance also deviates accordingly.

In contrast to the sedan and the Avant, the 1.8 T, 2.0, 2.4 and 3.0 as well as the S4 petrol engines were available in the Cabriolet. Only the 2.5 TDI was available as a diesel engine.

inner space

In the interior there are many changed elements, such as another dashboard with five round ventilation nozzles that are framed with chrome rings. This dashboard had the Seat Exeo until 2013 . It has an additional storage compartment between the radio and the central air vents. The front door panels have been changed due to the longer convertible doors and have changed speaker covers and adapted armrests. The displays of the instrument cluster are framed deeper to enable better readability when the top is open and the sun is shining accordingly. The complete rear seat area, including side panels, seats, standard ski loading equipment, mounts for the front seat belts, fixed headrests on the rear seats and the invisible roll bars behind, was specially designed for the convertible.

The convertible top of the Audi A4 Cabriolet was available from the factory in three colors (red, black and blue) and equipped with a glass rear window and a standard window heater. When the top was closed, a movable top compartment could be folded up in the trunk, increasing the trunk volume from 246 to 315 liters. Under the trunk floor there was a fully-fledged spare wheel as well as on-board tools and a jack. The antenna system for radio, telephone, navigation system and telematics was integrated in the tailgate.

drive

The Audi A4 has front-wheel drive as standard . The quattro all-wheel drive system is optionally available in conjunction with various engines (see engines). All-wheel drive is standard on the S models.

construction time

  • Limousine : November 2000 to November 2004
  • Kombi : September 2001 to November 2004
  • Cabriolet : April 2002 to January 2006

Although the sedan and station wagon were only built for about four years, 1,200,852 vehicles left the factory. The Avant accounted for 482,633 of these units, which corresponds to a share of 40.2%.

Facelift

Externally, the B6 model was hardly changed during the construction period. From mid-2003, the bumpers and side skirts were painted in the vehicle color as standard (previously special equipment). The Multitronic automatic transmission was also given the “S” shift position known from Tiptronic, which provides a sportier driving experience.

At the end of 2003, a new navigation system with 6.5-inch color screen (previously 5-inch), DVD drive, MMI operating logic, MP3 playback function and two slots for SD memory cards was introduced, the optional xenon headlights (only for low beam ) were replaced by bi-xenon headlights (for low and high beam ).

Most of the changes were technical in nature. The window antennas in the rear side windows of the Avant were lengthened, the five-speed gearbox was omitted in the 1.9-liter diesel with 96 kW, and the six-speed gearbox received improved synchronization in gears 1, 2 and 3.

For the first time, various “S line” equipment packages were offered for the A4 B6, giving the series vehicles a particularly sporty appearance. Depending on the equipment package, in addition to the sports suspension, seats and steering wheel, 17 or 18-inch wheels were also offered, as well as an exterior package based on the sporty top models of the S and RS models. The exterior package includes a modified front and rear bumper, a small rear spoiler on the trunk lid (or a roof edge spoiler on the Avant) and wider door trim strips.

The performance of some engines has been increased and the exhaust emissions and emission classes of selected engines have been improved.

The actual facelift took place with the introduction of the B7 in autumn 2004.

Model variants

Audi S4 sedan (2003-2004)

The S4 of this model series came out in early 2003 with 253 kW (344 hp) as a sedan and avant.

At the beginning of 2004 the S4 convertible appeared with the same performance. In contrast to the previous model, which was equipped with a V6 biturbo engine, a V8 naturally aspirated engine with a displacement of 4.2 l is used in the B6 . An RS4 based on the B6 was not built.

Trivia

  • While the headlights on the predecessor B5 were switched on using a steering column stalk, on the B6 this was done using a rotary switch.
  • All gasoline engines - with the exception of the 1.6 and 2 liter engines - have two rear silencers , one on the left and one on the right.
  • In contrast to its predecessor, the rear silencer on the diesel models is hidden behind the rear bumper .
  • The fuel tank holds 70 liters in front-wheel drive models. In models with all-wheel drive, the tank is designed to be smaller due to the modified rear axle construction and holds 66 l.
  • The rear lights of the A4 Avant were used in 2009 by the British car manufacturer Bristol for the one-off Blenheim Mk.4 at the request of a customer .
