The first generation of the S8 was offered on the German market from July 1996 to September 2002. It had a 4.2-liter V8 engine with 250 kW (340 hp) - which developed 265 kW (360 hp) from June 1999 - and was only available with the permanent quattro all-wheel drive with Torsen center differential .

A five-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic function , dynamic shift program (DSP) and sports program or a 6-speed manual transmission was available as a transmission, which made the Audi S8 unique in the segment of sporty luxury sedans. At the time of its market launch, it was the most powerful all-wheel-drive sedan in the world.

Motors and technical data

The engine is based on the V8 engine of the Audi A8 with 220 kW (300 hp). At an engine speed between 2900 and 6000 revolutions per minute, the S8 has 90% of its maximum torque available.

  • Driver and front passenger airbags, four side airbags and the so-called sideguard, the side head airbag
  • Audi Space Frame aluminum body (ASF) with increased rigidity, side impact protection, and rib and pelvic protection pads in the doors

Driving performance compared to other sports / luxury models

The V8 engine with 250 kW of the Audi S8 had enough power to take a tenth of a second off the Porsche 993 Carrera 2 in the acceleration sprint up to 100 km / h . The V8 variant with 265 kW (360 hp) was even two tenths of a second faster.

The performance of its direct rival, the Mercedes-Benz S 55 AMG with 265 kW (360 hp), surpasses that of the Audi with Tiptronic by a good second; In a direct comparison between the S 55 AMG and the Audi S8 with manual transmission, both are on par. When AMG built a compressor into the S 55 AMG in 2002 - which increased the output to 368 kW (500 hp) and brought a maximum torque of 700 Nm - it was able to undercut the 5-second limit and was therefore significantly faster.

In addition to the S 55 AMG, there was also another sport luxury sedan, the based on the BMW 7 Series E38 built Alpina B12 . Despite its more than 5.6-liter twelve-cylinder (later with 6-liter displacement), this did not achieve the same acceleration values, but after the model revision in 1999 it impressed with a top speed of over 291 km / h. For a long time, the Alpina B12 held the title of the fastest production sedan in the world, which made it even more exclusive than the Audi S8, not least because of its small numbers.

The second generation was offered on the German market between mid-2006 and early 2010.

The V10 engine in the Audi S8 has a displacement of 5.2 liters and has an output of 331 kW (450 hp). The power delivery was designed for pulling power. The V10 thus achieves its maximum torque of 540 Nm between 3000 and 4000 rpm. Contrary to rumors to the contrary, the 5.2-liter V10 of the S8 is a new and in-house development based on the V8-FSI engine (not the RS4-B7 engine, but the normal V8-FSI engine) from Audi and is not based on the 5.0-liter V10 of the Lamborghini Gallardo, which was built until 2008. The engine of this S8 is also installed in a performance-enhanced version in the current Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4, which has been manufactured since 2008 .

On the body side, the S8 hardly differs from the “normal” A8. The aluminum- look exterior mirrors and the single-frame radiator grille with chrome-plated vertical struts are striking . In addition, honeycomb grids on the left and right as well as a more pronounced bumper reserved for the S8 are installed. At the rear, the S8 can be recognized by the two oval double tailpipes and the rear spoiler integrated into the trunk lid.

The standard equipment includes a multifunction sport leather steering wheel, deluxe automatic air conditioning , cruise control , electrically adjustable front seats, keyless entry with engine start button, double glazing, heated seats front and rear, a DVD navigation system , a surround sound system with CD changer and leather covers for the seats, center console and Door arm rests. Series is also the "adaptive light" mentioned lighting concept of the headlights with xenon headlamps , turning and cornering light function and verbrauchsarmem LED - daytime running lights .

In September 2011, the third generation of the Audi S8 was shown at the IAA in Frankfurt and went on sale in April 2012.

Instead of a V10 naturally aspirated engine as in the predecessor, a new 4.0-l V8 with twin-turbo charging is now used, which can draw on 382 kW (520 hp) (previously 331 kW) and a torque of 650 Nm (previously 540 Nm) - thanks to the charging, this is already available at a fairly early stage. Compared to its predecessor, the performance has also improved, from 0 to 100 km / h the new Audi S8 should take 4.2 seconds. The cylinder deactivation in the partial load range is intended to reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions; Audi specifies average fuel consumption of 10.1 l Super per 100 km. The only comparable model with a similar consumption is the Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG with 430 kW (10.1 - 10.3 l Super Plus). Other models comparable to the Audi S8 are: Porsche Panamera  Turbo S (4.8-l V8, 405 kW), Jaguar XJ  5.0 V8 Supersport (5.0-l V8, 375 kW) and the BMW 750i (4, 4-liter V8, 331 kW).
