The Audi A3 (internal type designation "8P") is the second series of the compact class vehicle Audi A3 . After the VW Touran I, it was the second vehicle within the VW Group to be based on the A platform of the Golf V (internal code PQ35 ). The official presentation of the three-door variant took place at the Geneva Motor Show 2003, that of the five-door A3 Sportback in 2004 at the Norisring as part of the DTM race held there.

Visually, the 8P remained largely true to the silhouette of its predecessor, but was more angular and - until the first facelift in early summer 2005 - was the last model series to incorporate the Audi double-frame radiator grille as the central design element of the vehicle front.

The A3 and S3 were produced at the main plant in Ingolstadt . A small batch was assembled from 2009 to 2010 at the Brussels plant . It served as a transitional model until the Audi A1 8X rolled off the assembly line there from mid-2010 . The bodies of the A3 Cabrio and the RS3 Sportback were manufactured and painted in Ingolstadt and final assembly at Audi Hungaria Motor Kft. In Győr .

Changes compared to the predecessor

  • new engines ( 1.6 FSI , 2.0 FSI , 3.2 and 2.0 TDI , later also 1.2 TFSI , 1.4 TFSI , 1.8 TFSI , 2.0 TFSI and 1.6 TDI ) TFSI with 6-speed or double-clutch transmission (S tronic), TDI with 5-speed or double-clutch transmission (S tronic) in the 1.6 TDI all other TDIs with 6-speed or dual clutch transmission (S tronic).
  • Direct shift gearbox DSG available from model year 2006 onwards from Audi S tronic for the 3.2 V6 since the beginning.
  • Various technical improvements such as electromechanical steering, independent suspension on the rear axle, two-zone comfort automatic air conditioning

Body styles

Like its predecessor, the 8L, the Audi A3 8P was available as a three-door (8P) and five-door (8PA). The five-door variant, the production of which began about a year and a half after the three-door, was called the A3 Sportback , which differed from the three-door mainly through modified rear lights and the 72 mm longer body.

Sales of the A3 Cabriolet began in Germany in mid-January 2008. Five engine variants were available, including three petrol engines with 75 kW (102 PS), 118 kW (160 PS) and 147 kW (200 PS) and two diesel engines with 77 and 103 kW (105 or 140 PS). Contrary to the general trend, Audi - as with the A4 Cabriolet - opted for a classic fabric top instead of a folding tin roof.

construction time

  • Three-door (8P): March 2003 to May 2012
  • Five-door (Sportback, 8PA): September 2004 to October 2012
  • Cabriolet: January 2008 to March 2013

drive

The Audi A3 8P is equipped with front-wheel drive as standard . The models with four-wheel drive ( Quattro drive ) have an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch ( Haldex clutch ) which, thanks to its variable locking effect, reduces spinning of the front wheels by directing power to the rear wheels when required. All-wheel drive is standard in the 3.2-liter engine and in the S3 and RS3 model variants. With the factory-set control of the Haldex clutch, more than ten percent of the torque is only transferred to the rear wheels if there is insufficient traction on the front wheels. Tuners can change this characteristic.

Model variants

Facelift

General

  • June 2005: S line exterior package can be ordered (front and rear bumpers in a distinctive sporty design, radiator grille in S-line look, S-line logos in the radiator grille and on the rear side protection strips, door sill trims with S-line logos, S-line Roof edge spoiler, fog lights, double exhaust tailpipe also with model 1.6)
  • September 2005: Introduction of Xenon Plus ( Bi-Xenon headlights with daytime running lights)
  • Autumn 2006: Conversion of all radio systems to double DIN format and introduction of a CD radio with MP3 playback function.
  • March 2007: Introduction of the 1.9 TDI e . Measures such as a longer ratio of gears 3 to 5, gearshift indicator in the instrument cluster , modified engine electronics, various aerodynamic measures (e.g. sports suspension as standard for lower air resistance) and low- friction tires reduce fuel consumption to 4.5 l / 100 km and CO 2 emissions reduced to 119 g / km.
  • November 2007 (announced): Introduction of an optional adapter for the hands-free system with support of the SIM Access Profile .
  • April 2008: Audi presented an extensive facelift for both variants. This includes changes to the bonnet, fenders, singleframe grille and the front bumpers. The headlights have new trim panels. Daytime running lights are now standard and are integrated into the headlights - with bi-xenon lights, LED daytime running lights are used. The side indicators are integrated in the side mirror, the door handles have been redesigned. At the rear, new bumpers, redesigned taillights and a minimal change to the tailgate stand out. In the interior, the light switch, the ventilation nozzles and the center console have been upgraded with an aluminum look. The instrument cluster also received a new design.
  • May 2009: The 3.2-liter VR6 engine was withdrawn from the range without replacement.
  • Summer 2010: Slight detail changes for three and five-door models: new aluminum rims available, an aluminum strut integrated into the front apron, door handles with chrome strips, changed shape of the exterior mirrors, rear diffuser with a slightly different design, instrument cluster now highlighted in gray

Three-door (8P)

For the three-door model that was facelift carried out in June 2005 with the start of the model year of 2006. The single-frame radiator grille and the steering wheel in a single-frame design are clear identifying features . With the facelift, among other things, the design of the A3 Sportback and thus also the uniform corporate image was adapted.

In spring 2008 there was another facelift, which u. a. Standard daytime running lights included. In the summer of 2010, further detail improvements were made, such as other aluminum wheels or an aluminum strut integrated into the front apron.

Five-door (8PA)

The five-door model called Sportback had had the single-frame grille and steering wheel in a single-frame design since the start of production (and thus before the facelift of the 8P).

In spring 2008 there was a first facelift for the Sportback, whereby it received daytime running lights as standard . In the summer of 2010, further details were changed, such as door handles with chrome struts or an aluminum strip integrated into the front apron.

Equipment variants

The equipment lines available are based on the previous model in terms of both the name and the respective features. There is a basic model called Attraction , a more sporty equipment variant Ambition , a comfort model Ambiente and a sporty S line , which is only possible in combination with Ambition.

Attraction
The basic model has 6.5J x 16 ″ steel wheels. The steering wheel is lined with foam in a 4-spoke design, normal seats with fabric seat covers.
ambition
With Ambition, 225 mm wide tires are mounted on 7.5J x 17 ″ aluminum wheels in a 5-arm design, the body is lowered by 15 mm. This equipment also includes sporty accessories in the interior such as sport seats at the front, 3-spoke sport steering wheel with gear lever knob, cuff and handbrake handle in leather as well as door sills with aluminum inlays.
Ambience
The Ambiente variant has 6.5J x 16 "aluminum wheels in a 7-arm design and is equipped with a leather steering wheel in a 4-spoke design, burl wood inlays in the dashboard, various additional shelves, light / rain sensors and cruise control.
S line
The S line equipment is available in two versions:
The S line Sport Package Plus includes leather seats, special aluminum wheels, a black headliner and a harder chassis with a body lowered by 25 mm instead of 15 mm. In addition, the “S line” lettering is attached to the steering wheel, side protection strips, door sill and radiator grille (up to the facelift in April 2008).
The S line exterior package only looks sporty, which is expressed above all by the corresponding "S line" lettering and various spoilers on the car.

Child safety

There is enough space in the back for two child seats . Isofix brackets on the outside seats in the back are part of the standard equipment. For the front passenger seat, the Isofix bracket and the airbag that can be switched off cost a surcharge.

Assembly outside of Europe

Outside Europe, the A3 Sportback was finally assembled by Audi Senna in Curitiba . From December 2012 to March 2013, the last units were assembled there using CKD kits from German production. The units were intended for the Argentina, Brazil and China markets, where the old generation was still in high demand.

The A3 was technically revised by Shanghai Volkswagen . While the first vehicles were tested on the Chinese roads as Škoda Sportback in late 2012, the model went into series production in May 2013 after a visual refresh under the name VW Gran Lavida . However, it should not be confused with the ordinary VW Lavida , which itself corresponds to the VW Jetta VI .
