The Audi A8 D3 (internal type designation: 4E) is an upper-class vehicle from Audi , which was manufactured from August 2002 to 2010 and is the successor to the Audi A8 D2 . The majority of its technical components were also used in the VW Phaeton , especially in the second generation ( D3 ).

Model history

After eight years of construction, the original A8 , known internally as the D2 , was replaced by the D3 in November 2002 (model year 2003) . The aim of the new development was to make the A8 more comfortable while retaining its proven strengths. The vehicle was officially shown in public for the first time at the Mondial de l'Automobile 2002. Production started in August 2002.

When the A8 (type D3) came onto the market in October 2002, three engine variants were available, each of which was an eight-cylinder model. A 3.7-liter engine with a maximum output of 206 kW (280 hp), which has an output of 15 kW (20 hp) more than the previous model, and a 4.2-liter engine with a four-wheel drive only were offered maximum output of 246 kW (335 hp). The car shares the technical D platform of the VW Group with the VW Phaeton and Bentley Continental GT .

Rear view

The diesel engine initially offered was an eight-cylinder engine with a displacement of four liters and quattro all-wheel drive, which accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.7 seconds with a maximum output of 202 kW (275 hp) and a maximum torque of 650 Nm. A particle filter system was available for this model from 2009 , which causes the allocation of the green particulate matter sticker for trips in all environmental zones.

In 2003, a three-liter six-cylinder petrol engine with a maximum output of 162 kW (220 hp) and front-wheel drive appeared for the A8. The twelve-cylinder model (W12) followed in 2004 with a 6-liter displacement and 331 kW (450 hp).

A three-liter, six-cylinder engine with common rail injection and a maximum output of 171 kW (233 hp) was presented as an entry-level diesel engine model in 2004 , which - like most of the engines in the A8 - was only available with Quattro drive.

Facelift

With the facelift in September 2005, from which all engine levels were equipped with the single-frame grill, the 3.0-l six-cylinder and 3.7-l V8 engines were removed from the range and replaced with a 3.2 -l-V6 engine with a maximum output of 191 kW (260 hp) and gasoline direct injection replaced. At this time, the 4.2-liter V8 engine with MPI ( Multipoint Injection ) with 246 kW (335 hp) was also replaced by the 4.2-liter V8 engine with direct fuel injection ( FSI ) and a maximum output of 257 kW (350 PS) replaced. Another entry-level engine followed later with the 2.8-liter V6 engine, which has an output of 154 kW (210 hp) and is expected to consume an average of 8.3 liters of petrol per 100 kilometers. In 2005, the 4.2 TDI, which replaced the four-liter diesel engine, with a maximum output of 240 kW (326 hp) and a maximum torque of 650 Nm was presented in a series saloon as the second most powerful diesel engine in the world after the BMW 745d.

The sporty version of the A8, the S8, appeared in mid-2006 with a 5.2-liter ten-cylinder engine and a maximum output of 331 kW (450 hp). This represents a sportier and cheaper alternative to the equally powerful W12, which was still built.

In 2008, 94.2% of all Audi A8 / S8 newly registered in Germany were commercially registered.

Audi showed the next generation of the luxury class sedan at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) 2010.

Another facelift took place in September 2007. The new features included revised rear lights, modified fog lights , modified side mirror caps with integrated indicators and a new entry-level petrol engine with a displacement of 2.8 liters (2.8 FSIe).

Construction times

  • 2002 to 2005: Audi A8 type D3 / 4E
  • 2005 to 2007: Audi A8 type D3 / 4E (first facelift: externally recognizable by the single-frame radiator grille)
  • 2007 to 2010: Audi A8 type D3 / 4E (second facelift: slightly modified radiator grille, side indicators in the mirror housing and modified taillights)

drive

With the D3 model , the continuously variable Multitronic automatic transmission was offered for vehicles with front-wheel drive, and a six- speed Tiptronic transmission with dynamic shift programs was used for models with Quattro drive . The high-torque diesel and gasoline engine variants were delivered exclusively with all-wheel drive (from 2005).

body

The body of the Audi A8 is made almost entirely of aluminum . This is to avoid rust problems in the steel, although aluminum can also corrode under certain circumstances . The self-supporting aluminum body bears the name Audi Space Frame . The Audi V8 already had a fully galvanized body, which seldom suffered rust damage, usually only after improperly repaired accident damage.

Another development goal was and is the reduction of vehicle weight and the associated consumption. This was only partially successful because the vehicle was to be equipped with all technically possible equipment details. This included the Quattro drive, which increased the weight by around 100 kg. Nevertheless, the Audi A8 was lighter than the comparable BMW 7 Series or the Mercedes S-Class.

The Audi A8 D3 was only offered as a sedan with a notchback . A combination version was not in the delivery program.

In September 2001, Audi presented the Audi Avantissimo study at the IAA at a time when the Audi A8 D2 was being sold . The MMI operating concept used in the Audi A8 D3 was shown in the Audi Avantissimo. Even if the audience's reactions were mostly positive, the production of such a station wagon is not planned by Audi in the near future.

Like its predecessor, the second generation of the Audi A8 was also available as a long version.

With the takeover of the twelve-cylinder engine (W12) with a displacement of 6 liters and now 331 kW (450 hp) from the D2, the A8 D3 was the first to receive the single-frame radiator grille, which from now on has shaped the front of all Audis .

The list of optional extras for the current A8 includes positions as an adaptive cruise control adaptive cruise control (ACC) and dynamic cornering lights . For the second generation A8, there was also a chassis with air suspension . The Audi A8 D3 is one of the first cars that were available from the factory with a Bluetooth car phone with SIM access profile instead of a simple Bluetooth hands-free system (from production week 34/2006).

The A8 in public and in the media

An Audi A8 or S8 was used in each of the films Transporter - The Mission , Transporter 3 and Transporter Refueled . Audi also provided cars for the participants in the 2003 EU accession summit in Athens , with all heads of government and foreign ministers being chauffeured in Audi A8s.
