Audi MMI , or more precisely: Audi Multi Media Interface , describes the operating concept of the infotainment system from Audi , used in the A1 , A3 8V , A4 B8 , A4 B9 , A5 , Q5 , Q3 , A6 C6 , A6 C7 , A7 , A8 D3 , A8 D4 , Q7 , TT 8J , TT FV and R8 . It consists of an operating unit in the center console, the so-called MMI terminal, and the central screen in the dashboard. It is used to control the infotainment functions such as music playback, telephone and navigation as well as the setting of many vehicle parameters . The name MMI was originally derived from the English technical term man-machine interface , because the infotainment system at Audi was significantly shaped by an ergonomic operating concept in its development.

Audi currently offers the MMI terminal system in two versions for the above vehicles. The MMI navigation is based on the original MMI terminal and has DVD navigation data, a 6.5-inch color screen, an SD card slot and voice control through spelling. The latest MMI generation (MMI-3G +) is offered with the MMI navigation plus . This has - depending on the vehicle model - improvements such as touchpad navigation (enables handwriting input as well as "Scroll on Map" and album browser), higher screen resolution (7 or 8 inch display with 800 × 480 pixels), integrated hard disk for navigation data as well as multimedia (music and video), playback options for audio, video and MP3 CD / DVDs and whole-word voice input.

Navigation system (RNS-E) with MMI operating logic in an Audi A3

Vehicles without an MMI terminal in the center console are operated via simulated MMI logic on the corresponding radio or navigation system (RNS-E). This variant was z. B. used in the two A4 series B6 and B7 . This MMI control logic is currently used in the TT , R8 , the Seat Exeo (based on the A4 B7 platform) and the Lamborghini Gallardo . With the appearance of the third MMI generation, this system was also upgraded with functions such as 3D map navigation, optical visualization of the parking aid and a high-resolution screen.

concept

In addition to the primary control unit, Audi has a number of buttons with which the main functions can be selected directly. There is also a separate control panel for controlling the air conditioning.

The main functions are divided into four groups:

  • Entertainment (radio, audio CD, DVD audio and video [third generation MMI] and TV)
  • Communication (phone and address book)
  • Navigation (navigation and traffic information )
  • Settings (vehicle, MMI and air conditioning)

The operation of the system through the terminal is based on the following rules:

  • The individual main functions can be accessed directly by selecting the function keys.
  • Turning and pressing the central control knob moves you through the menu and activates functions.
  • The control buttons around the button are used to access the submenus that are shown in the corresponding corners of the display. Depending on the menu, they change their function (so-called softkeys ).

In addition, there are two buttons for direct control of the audio source and a rotary push button for volume control.

timeline

Audi MMI infotainment system in the Q7
  • At the IAA 2001, the Avantissimo study, the first vehicle with an integrated MMI, was presented to the general public.
  • With the introduction of the new A8 (D3) in autumn 2002, the MMI also started. The system, including a 7-inch color screen, is part of the standard equipment.
  • In April 2004 the new Audi A6 was launched , in which the MMI is offered in two versions. In addition to the high version, which is largely identical to the A8 system, the basic version is offered with a 6.5-inch monochrome display.
  • Since the middle of 2004, the screen radio navigation for A3 and A4 has been offered in a revised form (RNS-E). Here the surface including buttons and menus and the operating logic of the double DIN device have been adapted to the MMI concept.
  • Since November 2007, with the new A4 series, the MMI terminal in vehicles with navigation systems has been used for the first time in the mid-range Audi. Models without navigation are operated via the radio, on which the MMI operating logic is reproduced. Depending on the equipment of the radio or navigation system, a 6.5 or 7 inch screen is built into the dashboard.
  • With the appearance of the Audi Q5 in autumn 2008, a revised MMI system with the additional designation plus was presented. This third generation can be ordered for a surcharge. It has a joystick function in the turn-push control, a higher-resolution 7-inch color display (800 × 480 pixels), whole-word voice input, playback option for audio and video DVDs, 3D map models and an integrated hard drive on which the map information are stored for the navigation system.
  • With the appearance of the new Audi A8 in 2010, the MMI in this model was given a larger screen (8 inches) and a touchpad function ( MMI touch ).
