Softkeys for setting the trigger source of an oscilloscope

A softkey is a key that performs different functions depending on an associated screen display. In contrast to the hardkey , the function of the key is not fixed, but is dynamically adapted by changing the screen area assigned to the key (usually the area of a screen directly next to the key or facing it). A softkey is similar to a button , with the difference that a real button is used outside the screen. Softkeys have a similar function to the mouse on a PC. They are used where alternatives such as mouse and touchscreen would be unsuitable for reasons of space, an unclean environment or a relatively small screen, for example with measuring devices, industrial machines, public devices or mobile phones .

With mobile phones and cordless phones , softkeys are located directly below the screen, with ATMs mostly on the right and left of the screen.
