from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Krüger (born March 20, 1840 in Berlin , † May 11, 1926 in Bonn ) was a German legal scholar and professor of Roman law . Krüger is important today primarily through his editions of Roman legal sources ( Institutiones Iustiniani , Codex Iustinianus , Codex Theodosianus ) and through his collaboration on Theodor Mommsen's large digest edition .

Life

After graduating from high school, the son of a dance teacher studied law in Berlin from 1858 to 1860. In 1861 he was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD. In 1864 Krüger completed his habilitation in Berlin for Roman law . In 1864 he became Mommsen's employee for the digest edition. In 1872 Krüger went to Marburg as an associate professor of law. In 1871 he was appointed full professor in Marburg. In 1872 he was appointed to Innsbruck. In 1873 Krüger received a full professorship in Königsberg. In the year of office 1883/84 he was elected rector (officially: prorector) of the University of Königsberg. In 1888 Krüger went to Bonn as a professor. In 1890 he was appointed to the Privy Council of Justice. In September 1919, Krüger retired.

The editions of the institutions and of Justinian's Codex, which are still relevant today, originate from Krüger. In 1868 he was the co-editor of the Turin institutional glossary based on the Justinian institutions . After Mommsen's death, he took over the new editions of the small Digest editions (since the 11th edition in 1908), into which he incorporated interpolation suspicions, for example .

After Krüger had worked on the Codex Theodosianus for 20 years, he had to leave the edition to Mommsen in 1898. This led to an upset in the relationship between the two. From 1920 onwards, Krüger began to follow Mommsen's edition with his own, which has the main advantage over Mommsen that the constitutions, which are only preserved through the Codex Iustinianus, were incorporated. Kruger only got as far as the 8th book when death tore him from work.
