The Lamborghini Gallardo is a sports car from Lamborghini . The name Gallardo (pronunciation: [ɡaʎˈʎardo] ) comes from one of the five main fighting bulls. This breed was named after the breeder of these fighting bulls, Francisco Gallardo, in the 18th century.

In the 368 kW versions, the Gallardo has air inlets in the bonnet, which in the 382 kW version can be replaced with a large glass insert if required. This makes the engine visible from the outside.

In spring 2014, the more than ten-year-old Gallardo was replaced by the new Lamborghini model Huracán , which was also known as the Cabrera in the previous reports .

Versions

Version 2003

Gallardo

The original basic model of the Gallardo was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2003 and manufactured until 2008. The Gallardo was designed as an entry-level model for the Lamborghini brand and as a competitor to the Ferrari 360 . In contrast to the 6.2 l V12 engine (426 kW) of the sister model Murciélago introduced in 2001 , which is approx. 280 millimeters longer, 143 millimeters wider, approx. 30 millimeters lower, 59 kW (80  hp ) more powerful, 21  km / h is faster, reaches a speed of 200 km / h 2.4 seconds earlier and is approx. 84,000 euros more expensive, the Gallardo was equipped with a smaller 5-liter V10 (368 kW / 500 PS) and did not receive any typical Lamborghini Scissor doors traditionally reserved for the twelve-cylinder models. The longitudinally installed mid-engine transmits its power to the road via a rear-heavy all-wheel drive, which distinguishes the Gallardo from its mostly rear-wheel-driven competitors. The two-seater coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in four seconds and reaches a top speed of 309 km / h. The purchase price was only about 160,000 euros, which earned it the name "The Porsche Boxster among the Lamborghinis".

Like the Murciélago, the Gallardo was also designed by the Belgian designer Luc Donckerwolke , who received the red dot design award in 2003 for the design of both vehicles .

Gallardo Spyder

The roadster variant Gallardo Spyder was presented on September 12, 2005 at the IAA 2005 and went into production in spring 2006. The Spyder is equipped with an electrically operated soft top and the 382 kW engine of the Gallardo SE.

Gallardo Superleggera

The Gallardo Superleggera is a weight-reduced, more powerful version of the Gallardo Coupé. The model presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2007 was available from March 2007. Because the performance of the revised basic model (LP 560-4) presented in 2008 exceeded that of the Superleggera, Lamborghini stopped production of the Superleggera after only one year - by then 619 cars had left the plant in Sant'Agata (the often mentioned 172 refer purely to the USA).

The Superleggera has 390 kW (530 PS), weighs 100 kg less (1330 kg) than the standard Gallardo, accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.8 s and manages 315 km / h. The power-to-weight ratio is 2.5 kg / hp. The hood of the Superleggera is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The interior door panels, the lower area of the rear bumper, the paneling of the transmission tunnel and the rear-view mirrors are also made of CFRP. The rear window and side windows made of polycarbonate bring further weight reductions. In the interior there are shell seats made of CFRP with an Alcantara cover. In addition, there is a weight-saving exhaust system and lighter tailpipes. The Superleggera was delivered with the "E-Gear" manual transmission as standard; the base price was around 186,000 euros.

Facelift 2008

Gallardo LP 560-4

The Gallardo LP 560-4 replaced the previous coupé and thus represented a facelift of the basic model. Lamborghini presented the LP 560-4 for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in 2008. The focus of the facelift was a new engine that replaced the 5.0-liter V10. The new engine has a displacement of 5.2 liters and - for the first time with Lamborghini - direct injection. The power increases by 60 PS to the eponymous 560 PS (412 kW), the maximum torque increases by 30 Newton meters to 540 Nm and the car is 45 millimeters longer than its predecessor. The engine is based on the power unit of the V10 variant of the Audi R8 introduced in 2009 . This can be seen from the cylinder spacing, which is now 90 mm instead of 88. In addition, the front and rear sections in particular have been visually revised.

Acceleration was improved to 3.7 seconds from standstill to 100 km / h and to 11.8 seconds from 0 to 200 km / h; the top speed was increased to 325 km / h. In addition to the new engine, the all-wheel drive train, the wheel suspension and aerodynamic details have been revised; In addition, the frictional resistance of various mechanical components has been reduced. Overall, the vehicle weight was reduced by 20 kg and fuel consumption by 18%; the aerodynamic efficiency of the downforce has been improved by 31%.

Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder

The Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder followed the Gallardo Spyder in spring 2009. It was presented at the LA Auto Show 2008. Powertrain and engine are identical to the Gallardo LP 560-4 Coupé; the revised design is also based on that of the coupé. However, due to the higher weight compared to the Coupé, it takes 0.3 seconds longer to sprint from a standstill to 100 km / h, i.e. 4 instead of 3.7 seconds. For the sprint from 0 to 200 km / h, it takes 13.1 seconds, 1.3 seconds more than the coupé. The Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder was voted “SportsCar of the Year 2009” in the “Convertible / Roadster Series” category.

Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera

In March 2010 Lamborghini presented the updated version of the Superleggera. The basis for this is the LP 560-4, whose output has been increased by 10 hp to 570 hp (419 kW). At the same time, the weight was reduced to 1340 kg.

Gallardo LP 550-2 Coupé and Spyder

In 2011, a coupé and a Spyder variant were presented based on the special “Valentino Balboni” model. They both have 550 hp (404 kW) and rear-wheel drive. The lack of all-wheel drive also made it possible to reduce weight. The Coupe weighs 120 kg less than the LP 560-4 Coupé, the Spyder variant weighs 30 kg less.

Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante

The Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante was presented in November 2010 as an open alternative to the Superleggera. Like the one in the Superleggera, the engine delivers 570 hp (419 kW); the weight could only be reduced by 65 kg due to the mechanics of the automatically opening roof. Most of this weight reduction was achieved through the use of CFRP in the engine cover, parts of the underbody and diffuser, as well as in the interior. The weight-optimized aluminum wheels of the Superleggeras also ensured weight savings. The performance of the Performante hardly differs from the LP 560-4 Spyder (0.1 seconds faster from 0 to 100 km / h, same top speed of 324 km / h); However, as with the closed Superleggera, the chassis has been adapted to a more sporty driving style.

Facelift 2012

At the Paris Motor Show 2012 Lamborghini presented a new version of the Gallardo LP 560-4. It differs from the original LP 560-4 primarily through a modified design on the front and rear aprons.

The front now has a central, trapezoidal radiator opening in the middle. The cooling inlets at the rear have also been redesigned and now have a trapezoidal design with a larger cross-section so that the engine is better ventilated and cooled. The 19-inch “Apollo polished” aluminum rims, available for the first time, are also new. Technically, the V10 with 560 PS (412 kW) was retained.

Since the 2012 facelift, there has been the option of ordering a styling package in which the lower front spoiler, the front air grilles and the cross strut in the rear are painted in gloss black.

Special models

Gallardo SE

Concept vehicles and one-offs

Lamborghini Concept S.

Lamborghini Concept S in the Lamborghini Museum

The Lamborghini Concept S is a prototype presented in 2005 at the Concorso Italiano in Monterey and the Concours d'Elegance in Pebble Beach. As a pure show car without an engine, it was already shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2005. The designer of the car, Luc Donckerwolke , found inspiration in classic single-seater super sports cars. A special design element is the Saute-vent windshield, which consists only of a glass wind deflector, which, similar to a Porsche 550, directs the air flow over the driver's head. In addition, the interior of the Concept S is divided into two parts. The rest of the design comes almost entirely from the Gallardo, as does the technology.

Police vehicle

The Gallardo as a patrol car for the Italian motorway police

The Italian motorway police ( Polizia Stradale ) received a copy of the Gallardo, painted in blue and white and equipped with an extra flat blue light on the roof, from Lamborghini in 2004 for their 52nd birthday . The vehicle is equipped with a video system for tracking at high speeds and is actually used on the Italian motorways in emergencies, urgent operations, but mainly for public relations purposes.

At the end of October 2008, Lamborghini handed over another modified Gallardo, this time an LP 560-4, to the authorities. This vehicle is equipped with a refrigerator for organ transport and a defibrillator .

The first car was destroyed in an accident with a Mercedes A-Class in December 2009 .

Gallardo Italia

The Gallardo Italia was presented one year after the victory of the Italian national team at the final of the 2006 World Cup in Berlin. The unique piece is held in the blue of the Italian national team. The Italian flag is on the roof. The engine was also gold-plated and is intended to be a reminder of the World Cup trophy . The interior was covered with blue Alcantara fabric.

Gallardo V8

The Gallardo V8 should expand the Lamborghini product range downwards in terms of price. This entry-level version was never officially announced or presented; However, on the basis of test copies, journalists suspected that this version would be equipped with a V8 engine from Audi instead of a 10-cylinder engine. According to estimates, the output of the engine should be above the 309 kW (420 hp) of the most powerful Audi V8 engine.

Motorsport

Gallardo of the Japanese Super GT Championship

FIA GT3

Gallardo models have been registered in the FIA's GT3 group since 2005 . This near-series model, like the Murciélago R-GT , was developed by the German company Reiter Engineering .

Super GT

Thanks to private entrepreneurs, the Gallardo is also represented in the GT300 class of the Japanese GT championship Super GT . For this it was necessary to throttle the performance of the Gallardo to 300 hp and convert the vehicle to pure rear-wheel drive. After initial teething problems, the Gallardo has been competitive since around 2009.

Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo

Two Gallardo Super Trofeo at the race in Hockenheim 2011

In 2009 Lamborghini presented the "fastest brand cup in the world" in cooperation with the Swiss watch manufacturer Blancpain . It uses a special racing version of the new Gallardo LP 560-4 with a modified chassis, lower weight and slightly higher performance. The vehicles take part in races as part of the German Touring Car Championship , the FIA GT Championship and the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) . In total, the series consists of 18 races and 30 teams, some of them private, several from dealers and an official Lamborghini team, which uses guest drivers in every race.

American Le Mans Series

In 2011, the West Racing team used a modified Gallardo LP 560-4 GT for some races. But in June of the same year, the team announced that they were working on a new car and therefore no longer using the Lamborghini.

VLN

From 2006 to the beginning of 2009, the German racing team Raeder Motorsport used a self-modified racing car for the SP8 class based on the Lamborghini Gallardo at the VLN endurance championship and the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring . The regular drivers of the Gallardo were the Nordschleife specialist Dirk Adorf and the racetrack architect Hermann Tilke . The vehicle was always a crowd pleaser, even if it did not see the checkered flag due to technical problems. However, these problems became less common as the vehicle developed over the years. On April 4, 2009, during the first race of the 2009 Endurance Championship, an oil pipe burst and the Gallardo's engine compartment caught fire. The vehicle was badly damaged and has not been used in races since. During 2012, Raeder Motorsport shared a photo on Facebook showing some team members in front of the rebuilt Gallardo.

In 2006 and 2007, in addition to the Lamborghini from Raeder Motorsport, another modified Gallardo was used in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring . This car was named with the starting number 16 under the team name "Lambo Racing GmbH". The so-called "Gallardo GTR" was used for test purposes as early as the end of 2005 as part of the BFGoodrich Endurance Championship , where it unexpectedly achieved a class victory.

In 2011 the Stuck³ team was founded in honor of Hans-Joachim Stuck . Under the slogan "Stuck³ - A Racing Dynasty", Stuck and his two sons Johannes Stuck and Ferdinand Stuck took part in several races of the VLN endurance championship and the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring, which was Hans-Joachim Stuck's last race in the Professional racing was selected. The vehicle used was a Lamborghini Gallardo LP 600+ GT3 built by Reiter Engineering . Minor changes had to be made to the vehicle for use on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. After its use in the 24-hour race, the car took to the starting line in various ADAC GT Masters races , where it achieved some successes.

production

The body, which is made entirely of aluminum, is manufactured in Heilbronn by ThyssenKrupp System Engineering . The bodies are in the Audi -Werk Neckarsulm painted; assembly then takes place in Sant'Agata Bolognese (Italy).

3000 copies of the Gallardo had been produced by November 2005 . It replaced Lamborghini's most popular model to date, the Lamborghini Diablo , of which 2,903 vehicles were produced. By March 2008 a total of around 7100 copies of the Gallardo had been produced. Eight to ten Gallardos are produced in advance in Sant'Agata Bolognese every working day. The waiting times for customers are around a year.

In November 2013, after 14,022 units had been produced, the last Gallardo rolled off the production line.

Registration numbers

In 2012, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, sixty Lamborghini Gallardo were newly registered in Germany, forty of them by commercial owners.

Others

  • On March 15, 2011, a Chinese businessman had his used Lamborghini Gallardo publicly demolished with hammers by a group of workers in Qingdao . With this action, about which there were press reports around the world, he reacted to what he believed to be the completely inadequate workshop service that Lamborghini had offered him, and complained about the general lack of customer service from Western luxury goods manufacturers in China.
  • In the episode The Italian Bob from the series The Simpsons , billionaire Mr. Burns buys a “Lamborgotti Fasterossa”. This is visually very reminiscent of the Lamborghini Gallardo.
