"Four-door hatchback coupé": Lamborghini Faena

The Lamborghini Faena is a four-door concept vehicle by Pietro Frua that is technically based on the Lamborghini Espada . It was created in 1978 as a one-off and was one of the last models that Frua, who died in 1983, realized.

History of origin

The Faena was Frua's proposal for a possible successor to the two-door, four-seater Lamborghini Espada.

In the literature, the Faena is often referred to as a four-door hatchback coupé, others see it as a four-door shooting brake . It was a long, flat vehicle with a hatchback, the proportions of which were roughly the same as those of the Espada. The roof line sloped down behind the C-pillar ; At the end of it, like the Espada, was a steep rear window. The horizontally arranged taillights came from the Citroën SM . The front section was slightly wedge-shaped. It had a full-width grille; above it were pop-up headlights . In terms of style, Frua followed up on his earlier designs: the front of the vehicle corresponded to that of a coupé that Frua had designed on the basis of a BMW in 1975, and the shape of the rear sideline was based on that of a design for an Audi coupé. The interior was equipped with four individual seats.

Technically, Frua kept the base of the Lamborghini Espada largely unchanged. The Faena was based on an Espada (Series 2) manufactured in 1970, which was delivered to a customer in Venezuela (chassis number 8224). Frua took over the vehicle at the end of 1977. The only change was an extension of the wheelbase by 18 cm, which served to increase the footwell in the rear of the vehicle.

The Faena was created in the first months of 1978. It was first presented at the Turin Motor Show in May 1978; here it was on Frua's stand. Two years later the car appeared again at the Geneva Motor Show , this time on Lamborghini's stand. A month later, a Swiss privateer bought the car. Since then it has been in Switzerland with changing owners. After a restoration in 2006, it is occasionally shown at exhibitions.
