The GT3 group is a vehicle category in motorsport launched by the FIA in 2006. It is reserved for Gran Turismo vehicles that have been adjusted to a performance level by the FIA.

history

The BPR Global GT Series was founded in 1994 based on the rules of the Le Mans 24-hour race . It was divided into the categories GT1 , GT2 , GT3 and GT4 . In addition to Porsche Cup vehicles of the 911 Carrera and 968 Turbo types , brand cup vehicles from Venturi and Ferrari were also eligible to compete .

In the course of the expansion of the series with races in the Asian region, the GT3 and GT4 categories were no longer held in this context from 1996 and were replaced by a series of national GT championships for these car classes. However, the designation and the vehicles registered differ from country to country. (Great Britain: Cup , France: Trophy Spain: GT3 .) In other GT series, a corresponding class was not advertised at all or had to start together with more powerful vehicles.

In addition, there were still several independent brand cups for cheaper GT vehicles in Europe: the Trofeo Maserati Europe , the Ferrari Challenge and the Porsche Carrera Cup or Porsche Supercup , on a national and international level. In particular, the Porsche 996 GT3 used in the Carrera Cup achieved immense popularity in national popular sport.

In 2006 its own GT3 European Championship was launched with regulations approved by the FIA. This also allowed other brands to participate. As a result, some manufacturers developed special new GT vehicles that did not come from one-make cups. For example Aston Martin or Ascari . A number of national championships took over the regulations of the GT3 and canceled the races of the GT1 and GT2 class, with their comparatively expensive cars. GT series overseas, such as Australia and Brazil, have also adopted the regulations that have so far mainly been used in Europe.

Despite the general success, especially in the British and Belgian GT championships, the starting field has shrunk compared to the previously quite revealing years. With the entry of several automobile manufacturers, costs have also exploded since 2008. A Cup Porsche 2006 cost around 150,000 euros, while a Cup S 2008 specially adapted to the GT3 cost 300,000 euros.

The Cup Porsche , which was originally used as a reference vehicle, was no longer sufficiently competitive over the years and has now returned to its own category in various national championships, despite the Balance of Performance . On the other hand, used and new vehicles made their way into popular sport, in Germany, for example, into the VLN endurance championship Nürburgring .

While series such as the European Championship and the newly created Blancpain Endurance Series , which were organized by SRO Motorsports Group , had strong GT3 starting fields, the FIA GT1 World Championship held with GT1 vehicles stagnated . Therefore, the 2012 World Championship switched to the technical regulations of the GT3. This made the GT3 group the only GT category advertised by the FIA in 2017.

    Technical regulations

The Technical Regulations of the GT3 European Championship are described by Article 257A in Appendix J of the International Sports Law . Weight and tire dimensions as well as the size of the air volume and boost pressure limitation are set centrally by the FIA in order to guarantee equal opportunities for all vehicles in the GT3 group. At the beginning of each season, all manufacturers are invited to a comparison test by the FIA in order to match all GT3 vehicles. The Cup Porsche was the reference vehicle in the early years; the FIA is currently setting a performance level based on the vehicles used.

The vehicles that want to start in the GT3 group must first be officially homologated by the FIA.
