The GT4 group is a vehicle category in motorsport initiated by the SRO Motorsports Group (SRO) in 2006 . It is reserved for slightly modified Gran Turismo vehicles that are intended to enable relatively inexpensive entry into GT racing below the more powerful GT1 , GT2 and GT3 categories . The decision-making authority over the class does not lie with the FIA , but with the SRO. This classifies the vehicles in balance of performance tests with handicap measures at approximately the same performance level in order to guarantee equal opportunities for the different constructions.

The GT4 group is technically not identical to the GT4 category that was used in the Global GT Series between 1994 and 1995.

history

The category was introduced in 2007 after the SRO Motorsports Group had previously reorganized the classification of the FIA GT championship and initiated the FIA GT3 European championship . Because of the minor modifications to the vehicles, the GT4 should form the entry-level class for amateur drivers in GT racing in terms of acquisition and operating costs, as well as the comparatively low performance . In 2007 the GT4 European Cup was announced in order to give the vehicle category a corresponding championship .

In 2008, the British GT Championship and the Italian GT Championship were the first national racing series to introduce the GT4 category. In 2008, the Sports Light sub-category for roadsters was also introduced, which was renamed Supersport in 2009 . In addition to the GT4 European Cup, another series was initiated by the SRO in 2009 with the Dutch GT4 Championship , which was reserved exclusively for GT4 vehicles. In the same year, the GT4 group was officially approved as a category in the VLN endurance championship and the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring . In 2010 the Brazilian GT series announced a championship for the GT4 category alongside the GT3. The newly founded GT Asia also introduced the GT3 and GT4 class structure in 2010.

Despite the expansion into various national championships and the staging of the GT4 European Cup, the GT4 group - in contrast to the GT3 group in the period from 2006 to 2012 - could not establish itself sustainably: Even in the European Cup there were rarely more than 20 vehicles, including the Subcategory Supersport , reported. In 2012 the European Cup was even canceled.

Although the concept of the GT4 group is designed for use by private drivers and teams, automobile manufacturers used their GT4 vehicles more or less directly. Aston Martin continued to develop the Vantage on a regular basis and not only did extensive customer sports, such as its own one-make cup in Asia and Great Britain, but also undertook works -supported operations. At the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring z. B. has been taking part since 2006 - even before the GT4 group was introduced. Nissan used the GT4 models of the 350Z and 370Z for the GT Academy , which was carried out jointly with Sony , and enabled the winners - Lucas Ordoñez , Jordan Tresson and Jann Mardenborough  - to race internationally with these vehicles.

  • Technical regulations

The technical regulations of the GT4 are determined by the "Règlement Technique pour Voitures de Grand Tourisme de type GT4" and the "Règlement d'homologation pour voitures de type GT4" of the SRO. The SRO GT4 Bureau approves the vehicles, while the Royal Automobile Club de Belgique (RACB) homologates them .

The basis must be series vehicles with an annual production volume of at least 300 units, which are made suitable for racing through minor modifications and brought to an approximately similar mileage through comparative tests with subsequent leveling measures. The minimum weight is 1000 kg. In addition to the removal of the interior trim and the installation of sports seats , the changes may only include the installation of new braking systems , damper systems and safety equipment such as roll cages or racing tanks. The engine and the engine position in the vehicle may not be changed without special approval ("waiver") from the SRO, whereby a mass-performance ratio of 3.5 kg / PS should be aimed for as a guide value . The bodywork may not be modified and aerodynamic devices such as wings or spoilers may only be used if they are already part of the production vehicle or if they have been approved by a special approval.

There is no minimum number of vehicles produced annually for roadsters in the Sports Light sub-category or from 2009 Supersport . Their minimum weight is set at 750 kg.

As a result of the comparison tests of the balance of performance , modifications to the vehicle weight and ground clearance , as well as additionally or alternatively to the air restrictor size or the speed limits, can be determined in order to maintain equal opportunities or to ensure this in newly homologated vehicles.

Racing cars of the GT4 group are used in various national and international racing series. However, depending on the regulations, GT4 vehicles can be given different names. In some series such as the GT4 European Cup and the Dutch GT4 Championship , they are the only class allowed. GT4 vehicles are or were eligible to start in:

The North American Grand Am Series approved the Aston Martin Vantage GT4 for the Grand Sport class in 2012 , although this otherwise has different technical regulations than the GT4 group.
