The Camaro is a pony car (a sports car) from the US automobile brand Chevrolet , which belongs to the automobile company General Motors (GM). According to Chevrolet, the name "Camaro" is derived from the French word camarade , which translates as "comrade" or "friend".

The world-famous sporty car emerged as a competitor to the extremely successful Ford Mustang in the mid-1960s and, as a typical representative of the pony cars, quickly became one of the most popular sports cars . Powerful SS models and the Z / 28 are also muscle cars . The German automobile manufacturer Opel , which until July 31, 2017 belonged to GM, pursued a similar, no less successful concept with the Opel Manta . Since it was built on the same platform (F platform), the Pontiac Firebird was considered its sister model.

The standard engine of the Camaro was always large-volume V8 engines beyond 200 hp (147 kW). Also offered in -line six-cylinder , later V6 engines, in the 1980s also in-line four-cylinder, were the entry level and, in addition to the smaller V8 engines, the basis.

Between the autumn of 1966 and the summer of 2002, four different generations of Camaro came onto the market. The fourth generation of the Camaro was built from the beginning of 1993, but it no longer had much in common with the original design. In Germany, a 3.8-liter V6 with 142 kW (193 hp) was available as a coupe and convertible. The 5.7-liter V8 as the Z28 with 212 kW (288 hp) was sold in Germany exclusively as a coupé with T-tops (two removable glass roof halves).

The first only offered in the US top model bears the name SS derived from S uper S port , and worked as a coupe and convertible available. However, these models were not manufactured by General Motors from 1987 to 2002 , but by SLP , an independent tuner and refiner, comparable to M-GmbH at BMW or AMG at Mercedes-Benz .

In August 2002, the production of the fourth generation was discontinued due to ever decreasing sales figures.

Only after a break of almost seven years did GM resume production of the series with the fifth generation in the spring of 2009. The prices for the Chevrolet Camaro in Germany start at 44,700 euros (as of April 2019).

The sixth generation of the Camaro has been available since 2015 and received a facelift in 2018.

In the film " Run All Night " from 2015, lead actor Liam Neeson drives a Camaro Coupé from 1985.

The Camaro has been in all previous parts of the blockbuster series " Transformers prominent" place . In the first part of 2007 a Z / 28 from 1977 and a replica of the Camaro Concept 2009 were used. The latter was created at Saleen in collaboration with GM. The original forms of the concept car were used for the body made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP). The chassis was taken over and adapted from a Pontiac GTO . Most attachments including the "aluminum" wheels were dummies made of fiberglass.

In " Transformers 2 - Die Rache " from 2009 a prototype or pre-production model of the Camaro Z28, which is not yet available for sale, was used. In “ Transformers 3 ” (2011), “Bumblebee” anticipated elements of the upcoming ZL1, and a concept car was also used in “ Transformers: Age of Fall ” (2014) .

In 2013, in the film “ The Last Stand ”, Arnold Schwarzenegger competed in a Camaro ZL1 against the villain who was racing towards Mexico in a tuned Corvette ZR1 . Both vehicles are largely dismantled in a corn field.

For “ 2 Fast 2 Furious ” from 2003 several Camaro SS Coupés from 1969 were used, which were redesigned for the film as “Yenko S / C” (so-called “Clones”). A vehicle was destroyed in a stunt with a yacht.

In the part “ Fast and Furios 6 ”, which appeared in 2013, an orange 1967 Camaro SS is part of the vehicle fleet of the team led by Dominic Toretto and Brian O'Conner.

A 1967 Camaro convertible with RS option was used in the movie " Petulia " from the same year.

In the TV series “ Hawaii Five-0 ”, the main actors drive a silver Camaro LT / RS Coupé from 2010. A black facelift Camaro 2SS RS from 2014 has been used in the 1LE model variant since the beginning of the fourth season.

In the series " The Americans " Philip Jennings, played by Matthew Rhys , buys a white Chevrolet Camaro during the second season.

A 1969 Chevrolet Camaro was used in the music video for the song Stylo by the British band Gorillaz .

“ Monaco Franze ” also drives a white Camaro (probably 1976) in the series of the same name.

A 1967 Camaro is destroyed by " Christine " - a Plymouth Fury from 1958 - at a gas station. The film was released in 1983, directed by John Carpenter.

Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) drives a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro in the American fantasy series "The Vampire Diaries".
