Pontiac GTO (1964-1974) |
The Pontiac GTO is a four-seat coupé that was produced in Australia for the US market from autumn 2003 to summer 2006 and is based on the platform of the Holden Monaro .
For the 2004 model year, Pontiac revived the traditional GTO designation and began importing the modified Holden Monaro into the United States. After only three years, the GTO, which was not selling well, was taken off the market in the summer of 2006.
history
At the end of 2003, the new Pontiac GTO appeared in the USA, the first in almost 30 years. The fact that the coupé came from Australia caused displeasure in certain fan circles, who would have preferred an independent, local model as a modern reincarnation of the classic muscle car .
Behind the GTO was General Motors manager Robert A. Lutz , who was shown a Monaro on a visit to Australia. He then decided to sell the coupé in the USA as well, albeit not without giving the planned GTO some technical changes. In contrast to the Monaro, the tank of the GTO is in a better protected position in front of the rear axle.
Model years
2004
In the first model year, the GTO was powered by a 5.7 liter V8 from the Chevrolet Corvette ; a six-speed gearbox or a four-speed automatic transmission provided power transmission.
In the first model year, sales in the USA were 12,000 units, well below the planned 30,000 units. The smooth styling was often criticized, as was the inadequate workmanship, for example in a test report by the influential Car & Driver magazine .
The GTO with Pulse Red package with red paintwork and red inserts on the seat covers was only available in model year 2004 . From Pulse Red 800 units were built.
Except in the USA, the Holden Monaro was sold as the Chevrolet in the Middle East and in the UK as the Vauxhall Monaro .
2005
For the 2005 model year, the GTO underwent a number of changes and improvements.
In detail:
- New six-liter V8 (type LS2) with 299 kW (406 hp) and 538 Nm torque
- Larger brakes with red painted calipers and GTO lettering
- Air scoops on the hood
- Double exhaust and modified rear apron
- 18-inch alloy wheels (at an additional cost)
- Footrest for the coupling foot
- Instruments with new graphics
- Extended range of extras
- Two new paint colors ("Cyclone Gray" -Metallic and "Midnight Blue" -Metallic)
- Lacquer colors "Barbados Blue" -Metallic and "Cosmos Purple" -Metallic are omitted
- Interior color "Dark Purple" is not applicable.
2006
There were some minor changes for the last model year.
- Central locking switch on the center console
- Dark tinted rear lights
- Radio control buttons in the steering wheel with lighting
- When painted in Brazen Orange, the instrument scales are orange, decorative stitching on the seats, gear knob, steering wheel and armrests are orange
- Two new paint colors ("Brazen Orange" and "Spice Red")
- Elimination of two paint colors ("Yellow" and "Midnight Blue" Metallic)
The last Pontiac GTO rolled off the assembly line in Australia on June 14, 2006. However, this was not due to the weak sales figures, but rather to the fact that the plant had planned from the outset with a production period of only three years of construction.
