The Pontiac Astre was a model of the subcompact (small car) class produced by the US automobile manufacturer Pontiac from 1974 to 1977 .
The Astre was the largely identical sister model of the Chevrolet Vega introduced in 1970 .
Model history
The rear-wheel drive Astre, presented in September 1974, was available as a two-door notchback - and as a three-door hatchback coupé , as well as a three-door station wagon , each powered by a 2.3 liter aluminum four-cylinder with 79 or, with double carburettors, 88 hp (58/65 kW), which transmitted their power via a four-speed manual gearbox or a three-speed automatic.
In the 1976 model year, the engine's output sank to 71/85 PS (52 / 62.5 kW) and a new five-speed manual transmission was available for an additional charge. In 1977 the weaker version of the engine was deleted, while a 91 hp (67 kW) 2.5-liter four-cylinder was new.
In the autumn of 1977 the Astre was completely removed from the offer; by then he had made a total of 147,500 copies. The station wagon coupé with a modified front end was taken over into the range of the technically closely related Pontiac Sunbird .
