From the spring of 1977, the former Pontiac Ventura was continued to be built as the Pontiac Phoenix with slight cosmetic changes.

The range of models (two- and three-door coupé and four-door sedan) and the choice of engines (3.8-liter V6, 5.0 and 5.7-liter V8, and 2.5-liter four-cylinder upon special request) changed Nothing.

The Phoenix was available in the basic and LJ equipment levels, the latter not as a hatchback coupé.

The production of the Phoenix with rear-wheel drive ran out in early 1979; a total of 125,555 copies were built.

The second generation Phoenix was based on General Motors' X platform with front-wheel drive and was closely related to the Chevrolet Citation , Buick Skylark and Oldsmobile Omega . Compared to its direct predecessor, the new model was almost half a meter shorter and around 400 kilograms lighter.

In the spring of 1979 the new, smaller Phoenix appeared, available as a two-door notchback coupé and five-door hatchback sedan in the basic and Phoenix LJ equipment versions . In the engine compartment sat either a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 67 kW (91 hp) produced by Pontiac or a 2.8-liter V6 with 83 kW (112 hp) from Chevrolet , each of which could be combined with a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission .

From model year 1982 the 2.8-liter V6 was also available in a high-performance version with 97 kW (132 hp) for the new Phoenix SJ model variant, and the four-cylinder also received intake manifold injection . In 1983, as almost every year, the grill was changed slightly, in the last model year 1984 the SJ five-door was omitted.

Like its sister models, the Citation, Skylark and Omega, the Phoenix was available from German Opel / GM dealers.

By the summer of 1984, a total of 405,000 copies of the second generation Phoenix were built, including just 2,988 SJ.
