Previous model Pontiac Le Mans

The Pontiac 6000 was a mid-range model built by the American car brand Pontiac from autumn 1981 to summer 1990.

The 6000 was based on the General Motors A-platform and was closely related to the Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera , the Chevrolet Celebrity and the Buick Century .

The A-platform models with front-wheel drive replaced the mid-range models on the A-platform with rear-wheel drive, which were introduced for the 1978 model year and were reduced in size for the first time ( Chevrolet Malibu , Buick Century, Pontiac Le Mans and Oldsmobile Cutlass ). Their coupé variants were continued for a few years, as were the station wagon versions (until the front-wheel drive successors appeared).

Compared to the older A platform, the new generation models were once again smaller, lighter and more economical.

Model history

In the 1982 model year, the Pontiac 6000 made its debut as a coupé and sedan with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder or 2.8-liter V6, each with a three-speed automatic, in the basic and LE version with higher equipment.

In 1983, the top model, the 6000 STE, was added to the range, which was positioned as a sports sedan with 137 hp, 2.8-liter six-cylinder against corresponding cars from Europe. At the other end of the spectrum, the 4.3 liter V6 diesel with 86 hp was available.

From 1984 the 6000 was also available as a five-door station wagon.

In 1986, in addition to the basic model and the LE, an SE version above it was available. There was no diesel.

For the 1987 model year, the station wagon was renamed Safari , a traditional Pontiac name that goes back to the 1960s.

In the 1988 model year, all two-door variants of the 6000 were discontinued.

In 1990 the former STE was renamed S / E.

In the summer of 1990 the 6000 was completely discontinued. A total of 950,000 copies rolled off the assembly line in around nine years.
