successor Oldsmobile Cutlass (N platform)

The Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera was a mid-range model built by the American manufacturer Oldsmobile from the summer of 1981 to the end of 1996.

The Cutlass Ciera, which was only called Ciera from the 1995 model year, was based on the A-platform from General Motors and was closely related to the Chevrolet Celebrity , the Pontiac 6000 and the Buick Century .

These models based on the A-platform with front-wheel drive replaced the mid-range models introduced for the 1978 model year, the Chevrolet Malibu , Buick Century , Pontiac Le Mans and Oldsmobile Cutlass, also with A-platform and rear-wheel drive. Their coupé variants, however, continued to be produced for a few years, as did the station wagon versions (until the front-wheel drive successor model appeared).

Compared to the older A-platform models, the new generation were again smaller, lighter and more economical.

Model history

  • 1981: With the beginning of the 1982 model year in the summer of 1981, the Cutlass Ciera appears as a coupé and a sedan in the Basic , LS and Brougham equipment . The drive is taken over by the Pontiac 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 91 hp, a three-liter V6 with 112 hp or an 86 hp 4.3-liter diesel V6, all equipped with a three-speed automatic transmission as standard.
  • 1983: The previous basic models are discontinued, and in the course of the year a four-speed automatic replaces the previous three-speed unit on some engines. The ES package with sports suspension, wide tires and matt black decor is also new to the range .
  • 1984: In addition to the coupé and sedan, a five-door station wagon is now offered, which is sold under the name Cutlass Cruiser . All models are also available with a 3.8 liter V6 (142 hp) on request.
  • 1985: The front and rear are slightly retouched. The ES continues to be offered as a special model , plus a new GT model with the 3.8 l V6 and the Holiday Coupé (a traditional Oldsmobile designation that goes back to the 1950s) with upscale equipment. In spring 1985 the diesel engine was canceled due to lack of demand.
  • 1986: The model range is reorganized and now includes the versions Basis , S and Brougham . The GT and ES models remain available. The three-liter V6 engine replaced the 2.8-liter Chevrolet unit . From March 1986 onwards, the coupés were given a C-pillar that was no longer vertical, but now angled forward.
  • 1987: The station wagon, previously marketed as a separate model, is integrated into the Cutlass Ciera range; it is available as a basic model and as a brougham . Instead of the four separate rectangular headlights, the more expensive versions of all models have new broadband headlights, which are now legally approved.
  • 1988: The Cutlass Ciera International Series is introduced as the sporty top model of the series , which is equipped with the 3.8 liter V6 as standard. All models now have broadband headlights as standard.
  • 1989: An extensive facelift on the front and rear refreshes the Cutlass Ciera, the sedan also has a modified roof. A new 3.3 liter V6 (162 hp) replaces the previously offered 3.8 liter.
  • 1990: The model range is restructured, the range now includes a basic sedan, the S as a coupé, sedan and station wagon, the SL as a sedan and station wagon and the International Series as a coupé and four-door model. On the engine side, only the four-cylinder, which has been boosted to 112 hp, and the 3.3-liter V6 are available.
  • 1991: The International Series is canceled.
  • 1992: The range is limited to four models: the Cutlass Ciera S and SL , each as a sedan and station wagon; the coupé is omitted. Still, the Ciera is Oldsmobile's best-selling car this year with around 140,000 units.
  • 1993: The SL models are equipped with driver airbags as standard. The new basic engine is a 2.2 l four-cylinder with injection (112 hp), which is coupled to a three-speed automatic.
  • 1994: Further reduction of the model range to the Sedan S (sedan) and Cruiser S (station wagon) versions . The four-cylinder now has 122 hp, the station wagon comes with a 3.1 l V6 with 162 hp as standard; the 3.3 liter is omitted.
  • 1995: The name Cutlass is dropped, sedan and station wagon are now called Ciera SL .
  • 1996: At the end of the year, the Ciera is discontinued and replaced by a new Cutlass based on the N platform.

A total of 2.91 million pieces of the Cutlass Ciera were made in 15 years.
