In September 1970, Oldsmobile presented a new large station wagon based on the Delta 88 along with the other 1971 models . This station wagon was optionally available with five or seven seats (single seats in front) or with six or eight seats (three-seater bench in front). Like the 88 and 98 models, the Custom Cruiser featured a V-shaped front section with a split grille with a painted center bar and Oldsmobile emblem. The underside of the radiator grille reached behind the front bumper. The round double headlights were framed in a rectangle. Above the partially covered rear wheels, the body showed a "hip bend". The sides of the vehicle were decorated with imitation wood (reminiscent of the earlier "Woodies"). The carriage with the longer wheel base of the model 98 had a V8 engine with 7456 cc capacity, the at 4400 min -1 developed a power of 280 hp (206 kW).

In 1972 the car was further built almost unchanged, but the engine output to 225 bhp (165 kW) at 4,000 min -1 lowered. In 1973, a minor facelift resulted in a slightly lower front section with a continuous front bumper. The models were now available with and without imitation wood on the sides of the vehicle. Engine performance was again at 275 bhp (203 kW) at 3600 min -1 raised. In 1974 there was another modified radiator grille with a chrome-plated grid structure that reached into the horizontal bonnet. The engine output sank again to 210 bhp (154 kW) at 4000 min −1 . In 1975 there was a four-part, slightly flatter radiator grille. In technical terms, the model remained unchanged this year.

In 1976, the custom cruiser was again given a two-part grill, this time with rectangular twin headlights with flat position and indicator lights underneath. Engine performance was even further to 190 bhp (140 kW) at 3,400 min -1 lowered.

In 1977 the custom cruiser was completely redesigned. In future it would no longer have the larger wheelbase of the 98, but that of the 88. While stylistically little changed, the combination was significantly smaller "small-block" engine with 5735 cc capacity and 170 hp (125 kW) at 3800 min -1 . The versions without imitation wood were no longer offered.

In 1978, the body remained unchanged, but there were optional two new engines: Another petrol V8 with 6603 cc and 185 bhp (136 kW) at 3600 rpm -1 and a diesel V8 with 5735 cc and 120 bhp (88 kW) at 3600 min -1 . In 1979 the output of the two petrol engines fell to 160–165 bhp / 118–121 kW (5.7 l) and 175 bhp / 129 kW (6.6 l). The diesel engine increased to 125 bhp / 92 kW. In 1980, the power of the engines was further reduced: the 6.6 l V8 was no longer available, the 5.7 l V8 only achieved 160 bhp (118 kW) and the diesel only a meager 105 bhp (77 kW) ) at 3200 min -1 . There was also an even smaller petrol V8 with 5031 cm³ displacement and an output of 150 bhp (110 kW). There were no changes to the bodywork in 1981 either, but the 5.7 liter V8 petrol engine was removed from the range and the 5.0 liter V8 now only developed 140 bhp (103 kW).

The custom cruiser was built until 1985 with this range of engines and only minor changes in appearance. In 1986 the diesel engine was discontinued due to lack of demand and from 1988 the custom cruiser was the only car in the Oldsmobile model range with rear-wheel drive. The station wagon continued to be built in this form until 1990.

In 1991 the styling of the custom cruiser was completely redesigned. It received a more rounded body shape, broadband headlights and a continuous radiator grille with a grid structure. Technically, the Custom Cruiser was the only Oldsmobile model that still had rear-wheel drive. The engine, however, was then provided with a fuel injection system and performed 125 kW at 4200 min -1 .

1992, in the last year, there was at the request again a larger V8 engine with 5735 cc and 132 kW at 4000 min -1 . In the following year, the large Oldsmobile station wagon was canceled without replacement.

448,503 copies have been produced in 21 years.
