The Pontiac Parisienne was a model of the American car manufacturer Pontiac , which belonged to the local full size class (upper middle class) and was offered in Canada from 1957 to 1986 and in the USA from 1982 to 1986.

Model history

Originally, the Parisienne was a Pontiac model that was sold exclusively in Canada. Since the late 1950s, Pontiac has not marketed the models offered in the USA there, but vehicles that combined Chevrolet technology and Pontiac bodies, whereby the technical relationship between the full-size cars of the two brands has always been close. These hybrid models usually also had their own names, for example Pontiac Laurentian (the Canadian counterpart to the Catalina ) or Pontiac Parisienne (counterpart to the Bonneville ).

While Pontiac took the rear-wheel drive full-size models out of its range in the USA in 1981 , these remained in production in Canada for the local market. When US demand for large models increased again from 1982 onwards, the factory responded by importing the Parisienne from Canada in autumn 1982. These vehicles were practically the contemporary Chevrolet Caprice with a modified grill, different taillights and Pontiac emblems; the bodies differed somewhat from the earlier Catalina and Bonneville from US production.

A basic model was offered as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon as well as a sedan called Parisienne Brougham with upscale equipment. It was powered by a 3.8-liter V6 with a three-speed or a five-liter V8 with a four-speed automatic (standard in the station wagon). On request, there was also the 5.7-liter V8 diesel built by Oldsmobile .

The 1985 and 1986 sedans received the taillights of the 1981 Bonneville and rear wheel arch covers. From 1985 a 4.3 liter V6 served as the base engine, and in 1986 the diesel was discontinued.

After the end of the 1986 model year, the Parisienne was taken out of the range again; the station wagon remained available until the summer of 1989 under the name Pontiac Safari .
