The Pontiac Grand Safari was a large full-size station wagon built by the US automaker Pontiac from 1970 to 1978 .
Model history
From the 1971 model year, the luxury versions of the large Pontiac station wagons that had previously been known as Safari were called Grand Safari.
The Grand Safari station wagons were officially part of the Bonneville series in the model years 1971/72 and 1975 to 1978 , and in 1973/74 they were part of the Grand Ville series. The combination models of the basic Catalina series were still called Safari.
The wheelbase of the Grand Safari models was a few centimeters longer than that of the other Bonneville and Grand Ville models until 1976 and was 323.6 cm.
In 1977 the large Pontiac models became considerably smaller; this also affected the station wagons, which lost around 40 cm in length and almost 500 kg in weight. While the tailgate of the older versions was divided horizontally in two along the base of the rear window, the new models had a rear door that could be folded down (with the rear window electrically retracted) and opened to the side.
There were two models on offer, a six-seater and a nine-seater with a third row of seats in the luggage compartment. They were powered by V8 engines of initially 7.5 liters, later also 6.6 and, from 1977, 5.7 liters.
From the 1979 model year, the name Grand Safari was dropped, instead the station wagon version of the Bonneville was called the Bonneville Safari again.
In eight years, 98,700 Grand Safari models were built.
