Metastadt (also metacity or hypercity ) describes a massively expanding metropolitan area with more than 20 million inhabitants. The first meta city became Tokyo when its agglomeration exceeded this population limit in the 1960s. Other meta cities today are New York City , Seoul and Mexico City . This means that currently three of the four existing meta cities are in industrialized countries . According to UN-HABITAT, the cities of Mumbai (formerly Bombay ), Delhi (both in India ), Shanghai ( People's Republic of China ), Manila ( Philippines ), São Paulo ( Brazil ), Dhaka ( Bangladesh ), Jakarta ( Indonesia ) and Lagos ( Nigeria ) achieve this status.

Around 1.5% of the global population live in one of the meta cities , whose populations are increasing by an average of around 1.5% annually. They require innovative, new forms of decentralized administration. Environmental pollution is one of the biggest problems and the lack of transparency in meta-cities in developing countries is more likely to lead to failure of government and administration than the size of the city itself. Several architects are currently working on a solution to the food, energy, and sewage problems. One example of this is the so-called “ vertical farm ” project.
