The Chevrolet 490 was a lower middle class passenger car manufactured by Chevrolet in 1916–1922 as an entry-level model. The car was significantly cheaper than the other Chevrolet models and was named after its price in the first model year of US $ 490. It was available as a single-door roadster or three-door touring car (the driver's door was missing in each case). Like the more expensive H series , the 490 had a four-cylinder block engine with overhead valves , 2802 cm 3 displacement and an output of 24 bhp (17.6 kW). The engine power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a cone clutch and a three-speed manual gearbox. The rear wheels were fitted with external band brakes. With its low selling price should the 490 against the Ford Model T compete.
In 1917, the two models got doors at the front left and there was also an "all-weather tourer" in which the fabric roof was replaced by a hardtop . The windshields were now angled 15 ° backwards. In the following year there was also a sedan with three doors (again the driver's door was missing). In 1919 the all-weather tourer was discontinued and there was also a two-door coupé.
In the 1920 model year, the biggest change took place on the 490: The cars received curved lines in the area of the bulkhead in the fashionable torpedo style and the engine output rose to 26 bhp (19 kW). In 1921 the car was also available as a chassis without a superstructure, and in 1922 as a two-door delivery van. In this last year of production, the sales price for the most expensive model, the four-door sedan, was already US $ 875.
In six years, 627,619 copies of the 490 were made. In 1923 the model was replaced by the Superior .
