The Chevrolet Cobalt (internal model name GMX 001 ) is a lower middle class passenger car offered by General Motors between 2005 and 2010 .

Model history

The first presentation took place formally at the LA Auto Show 2003. The Cobalt was produced in GM's Lordstown plant , where the production facilities were converted to it from the beginning of October 2004. The vehicle was introduced in the fall of 2004 as a 2005 model year as the successor to the Chevrolet Cavalier .

At the end of June 2010, production of the Cobalt was stopped. It was replaced by the Chevrolet Cruze J300, which replaced the Chevrolet Nubira in Europe in mid-2009 .

body

The vehicle is based on GM's Delta platform , on which the Pontiac G5 , the Saturn Ion and the European Opel Astra H stand, among others . It was available as a coupé as well as a four-door.

The weight distribution for the Coupé is 60:40 and for the four-door it is 59:41.

drive

Both body variants were available with either a 2.2-l or a 2.4-l R4 Ecotec petrol engine . The power is transmitted via a five-speed manual transmission or optionally via a four-speed automatic transmission . The top model was the "SS Supercharged", which is equipped with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine from the Ecotec engine family with supercharging and a manual five-speed gearbox.

Since the "SS Supercharged" no longer met the stricter emissions regulations that came into force in the USA from 2008 , production was stopped at the end of 2007. At the beginning of 2008 a new SS model was presented, this time with a 194  kW (260  hp ) four-cylinder engine with turbocharger .

On the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring , the Cobalt SS / TC (TurboCharged) held the class record for compact sports cars with front-wheel drive in 2007 with 08: 22.850 min.

Callbacks

From 2004 a problem with the ignition lock became known, which led to numerous accidents and led to a recall of several GM models, which also affected the Chevrolet Cobalt.
