The Chevrolet Onix is a car model from the automobile manufacturer General Motors . It was produced in the first generation by GM do Brasil in Gravataí and São Caetano do Sul and offered exclusively on South American markets as a medium-sized model in the small car class. A notchback version of the Onix is ​​offered as the Chevrolet Prisma .

The second generation presented in 2019 was also developed by GM do Brasil, but is also produced in China.

Model history

The vehicle was formally presented at the Salão Internacional do Automóvel de São Paulo in October 2012 and launched on the market in November 2012.

The model received a facelift in mid-2016, but the old model is still available as the Onix Joy . Since the facelift, a model with modified bumpers, silver applications and unpainted plastic wheels and sills has been offered under the name Onix Activ .

In Colombia, the notchback model Chevrolet Prisma has been available as the Chevrolet Onix Sedán since 2018.

After the appearance of the model of the same name on a new platform in September 2019, the Onix Joy model with the original appearance built from 2012 was no longer available in Brazil and its place was replaced by the Joy (on the website of Chevrolet Brazil) or Onix Joy with a slightly smaller model modified design of the facelift model offered since 2016.

Depending on the market, the model is available in three equipment lines and several special editions. As usual with Chevrolet, the basic equipment is called LS , above it are LT and LTZ . Two airbags and ABS are standard on all versions.

The model is based on the Gamma II platform and is thus removed with the Opel Corsa C related. As a drive there are two in-line four cylinder - Otto engines with 1.0 l and 1.4 l capacity can be selected, on the Flexfuel clock mode and with a five-speed manual transmission (six speed since the facelift in 2016) or a six-speed automatic transmission are connected.

Production and sales figures

In the first 18 months, approx. 184 830 pieces can be sold. The one millionth vehicle of the model was built in 2018.

Model history

The second generation of the Onix was presented at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2019. It was developed again by GM do Brasil and is based on the new GEM platform from General Motors.

In China, the sedan went on sale in April 2019, and the South American market is expected to follow in the second half of 2019.

In mid-September 2019 in Porto Alegre, Brazil, both the notchback sedan already presented in China, called Onix Plus, and a hatchback version for the local market were presented.

Engines

In China, a turbocharged 1.0-l R3 petrol engine with a maximum output of 92 kW has been available since the market launch . For Brazil, a three-cylinder engine with the same displacement is to be available in a variant without and an ethanol-compatible variant with a supercharger; the maximum power should be 60 kW or 85 kW.
