The Chevrolet Opala is a mid-range rear-wheel drive car produced by the Brazilian subsidiary of General Motors from 1969 to 1992 and also the first passenger car to be manufactured by General Motors in Brazil.
The Opala was based on the Opel Rekord C and was presented at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in November 1968. The four-door sedan and the two-door coupé were initially available. Instead of the engines used in the record, the 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder and 3.8-liter in-line six-cylinder from Chevrolet were installed, the latter later replaced by a 4.1-liter six-cylinder.
The 4.1-liter Opala SS presented in 1971 was the fastest Brazilian car until the Ford Maverick with a five-liter V8 appeared.
In 1975 a station wagon version called a caravan appeared (only with two doors).
Since the late 1970s there have also been more extensively equipped luxury versions of the Opala under the name “Comodoro” and “Diplomata”. The Chevrolet Opala from 1969 to 1984 has a front turn signal with parking light (American style) and a brake light with turn signal (American style). From 1969 to 1984 it has the same door handle as the Opel Rekord C. The Chevrolet Opala from 1985 to 1992 has a headlight with parking light in the front (European style) and has orange turn signals on the back (European style). From 1985 to 1992 it has new door handles.
The production of the Opala and its variants was stopped in 1992; in the same year the millionth copy rolled off the assembly line. The successor was the Chevrolet Omega based on the Opel Omega A2 .
