The Chevrolet Cruze (internal type designation J300 ) is a passenger car model of the automobile manufacturer General Motors , which is counted to the compact class.

Model history and body variants

At the Mondial de l'Automobile motor show in October 2008, the Cruze was presented as the successor to the Chevrolet Nubira (Europe / Asia) and Chevrolet Cobalt (USA / Canada) models . The vehicle was launched in South Korea at the end of October 2008 under the name Daewoo Lacetti ; in Europe, the Cruze was offered from May 2009. In Australia, the car was launched in 2009 under the name Holden Cruze and replaced the Holden Astra .

The Subaru Justy was previously marketed as the Chevrolet Cruze in certain markets .

In the USA, the market launch was initially planned for April 2010, but this did not take place until 2011 due to the consolidation difficulties at General Motors at that time. The versions for the USA and Canada were manufactured in Lordstown .

Two years after the launch of the notchback sedan, the five-door hatchback version was presented as a near-series concept vehicle at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris in October 2008; the series version was sold in Europe from August 2011. A station wagon called the Cruze Station Wagon was launched on September 22, 2012. The estate variant was officially shown publicly for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show 2012.

Facelift

A first facelift for the Chevrolet Cruze was formally presented at the Busan Motor Show in mid-2012. With the introduction of the station wagon, the Step and hatchback versions were the Cruze in September 2012 a facelift subjected to what can be seen on a newly designed front apron.

After a second facelift, the vehicle was sold in China as the Chevrolet Cruze Classic from autumn 2014.

In 2015 the model received a third facelift, in North America the vehicle was sold as Chevrolet Cruze Limited for another model year, mainly intended for the fleet business.

design

Taewan Kim's design is based more on the manufacturer's American models such as the Chevrolet Malibu . The front section is angular and has the two-part radiator grille with a larger brand emblem, which is typical for Chevrolet. The side view is characterized by a light edge above the door handles and an indicated third window. The rear view is structured by round, two-part lights and a chrome strip. The twin cockpit principle is used in the interior , with a wide center console defining the areas for the driver and front passenger.

Furnishing

For the Cruze three different equipment variants were available, which were tied to different engines. The basic LS model had ABS , electronic stability control with traction control, and front, side and head airbags at the front. There was also power steering, an electronic immobilizer, a CD radio, power windows at the front and height-adjustable driver and passenger seats. Above this was the LT version and the higher quality equipment called the LTZ . Depending on the model, there was a choice of a voice-controlled DVD navigation system with a 7.0-inch color screen or CD radio systems with a USB connection, four or six loudspeakers and hard disk storage, as well as parking sensors and automatic air conditioning. The basic price for the basic model with 1.6-liter gasoline engine was 14,990 euros, the basic price for the top model SW 2.0 TD AT6 was 27,490 euros.

Special models

At the IAA 2009, the Cruze Irmscher Edition was presented based on the LT equipment. This was developed together with Irmscher and has 18-inch alloy wheels, lowering of the chassis, door sills with Irmscher lettering and a stainless steel exhaust cover.

The Irmscher Edition was later replaced by the special model Cruze SportsLine. This covers a similar scope. The SportsLine version was also available for other Chevrolet models, such as Spark, Aveo, Orlando and Captiva.

Sales figures

The Chevrolet Cruze was sold 704,691 times worldwide in 2011. This makes it the best-selling General Motors model by a clear margin . The largest shares are attributable to the USA with 230,000 and China with 220,000 vehicles. There were other major successes in Russia with 38,000 vehicles (18th place), Canada with 34,000 (11th place) and South Korea with 27,000 vehicles (17th place). In Australia, almost 34,000 vehicles were sold as Holden Cruze (5th place). According to Chevrolet Germany (June 2012), the current sales figures are over 1.3 million vehicles worldwide.

Motorsport

Chevrolet Cruze in the World Touring Car Championship

From 2009 the Chevrolet works team RML Group started a Super 2000 racing version of the Cruze in the World Touring Car Championship . The Cruze replaced the Lacetti , which was in use from 2005. The Cruze is powered by a 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine with a maximum power of 209 kW (284 hp) at 8500 min -1 and a maximum torque of 260 Nm at 5800 min -1 .

technology

The almost 4.60 meter long vehicle (4.68 meters as a station wagon) with space for five people is based on the Delta II platform from GM, which is used in the Opel Astra J , for example . The car, developed by international engineers, is built in various GM plants around the world.

Initially, two petrol and two diesel engines were offered as engine options in Europe. The 1.6-liter base engine delivers a maximum of 91 kW (124 hp) and the larger 1.8-liter engine a maximum of 104 kW (141 hp). Both have variable valve control . The diesel engines are 2.0-liter common-rail engines with an output of 92 kW (125 PS) or 110 kW (150 PS).

At the beginning of 2011, the two diesel engines were replaced by the newer version of the 2.0-liter common rail engine with a maximum output of 120 kW (163 hp). Until then, power was transmitted either through a manual five-speed gearbox or a newly developed six-speed automatic gearbox. A new manual six-speed gearbox is used in this engine, as in all other engine versions except for the 75 kW (100 PS) basic model. The older 1.6 and 1.8 liter models and with a five-speed gearbox are still offered on foreign markets. The six-speed automatic transmission was retained. The first vehicles with an automatic start-stop system went on sale from February 2012 .

Since the introduction of the station wagon, a 1.4-liter turbo gasoline engine with 103 kW (140 PS) has also been offered for all body variants.
