Honda Legend

The Honda Legend is a sedan of the upper middle class of Honda , which in the United States and Hong Kong to 1996 Acura Legend was offered and since then there Acura RL / Acura RLX is.

history

KA1 – KA6 (1985–1990)

Honda's answer to the German upper middle class was introduced in Germany in late 1985. The four-door model had a 2.5-liter V6 engine with electronic fuel injection and developed 127 kW (173 hp). The engine was later offered with a regulated catalytic converter, and the output was reduced to 110 kW (150 hp).

A two-door coupé and a new engine followed in the fall of 1987 . The revised unit developed 124 kW (169 hp) from a 2.7 liter displacement. The equipment was almost complete for the conditions at the time, the new price was well below that of a Mercedes-Benz or BMW with equivalent equipment at the time . The Rover 800, built from autumn 1986 to early 1999, was based on the Legend platform .

KA7 / KA8 (1990–1995)

A model change followed at the end of 1990, initially the four-door sedan, which was followed in the spring of 1991 by a two-door coupé.

The dimensions grew, as did the engine: the newly developed V6 engine now developed 151 kW (205 hp) with a displacement of 3.2 liters. This model, especially the Coupe, developed into the best-selling Legend to date. An interesting option was the Electro Gyrocator inertial navigation system . Between 1994 and 1999 the car was manufactured and sold in South Korea as Daewoo Arcadia (대우 아카디아).

KA9 (1995-2004)

The next model change came in spring 1996. Only a four-door sedan was offered. An engine that was too weak, an apparently too staid appearance and too high a price made the Legend a slow seller. The V6 engine produced “only” 151 kW (205 hp) with a 3.5 liter displacement, which the German group of buyers considered too expensive given the price of almost 80,000 DM. The equipment and the workmanship were, however, of the highest standard and did not need to shy away from the comparison with the German competition.

Starting in 1995, it was offered in Japan with the domestic GPS-based Internavi navigation system.

A facelift was carried out in mid-1999. The output rose slightly to 153 kW (208 hp). In addition, the standard equipment has been expanded to include xenon lights (only for low beam), side airbags, VSA ( driving dynamics control ) and an electrically adjustable steering column with memory.

KB1 (2004–2012)

In October 2004-Acura RL Version US presented simultaneously with the (model year 2005) a new Legend model in Japan, which caused a surprise among experts: For the first time since the voluntary internal market -Selbstbeschränkung Japanese automaker to 206 kW (280 PS) in 1989, a production vehicle with officially more than this output was offered. The newly designed 3.5-liter V6 VTEC engine developed 221 kW (300 hp) in both the US and Japanese versions. A sports car model was expected to break through this limit , not a sedan.

From autumn 2006 the new Legend was offered in Europe; in Germany at prices from 54,600 euros. The VTEC engine already installed in the Acura RL, which is used in the Europa Legend, officially has an output of 217 kW (295 hp). The new all-wheel drive SH-AWD (Super Handling-All Wheel Drive) as an active yaw system distributes the torque not only variably between the front and rear axles, but also between the left and right rear wheels. Optionally with adaptive cruise control .

At the end of 2008, a revised version of the Honda Legend appeared in terms of design and technology. This was available from spring 2009 at a slightly higher price. The look of the front of the new Legend is similar to the recently renewed Honda Accord . The shape of the headlights was changed, the fog lights and the radiator grille made more angular and the lower air inlet is now divided into three parts. In addition, the painted bumper strips are no longer required and the contours of the bonnet are more prominent.

The rear was made more three-dimensional through the use of light edges and the spoiler lip was integrated more fluently into the trunk lid. Furthermore, the chrome strip has been widened, the bumper has been changed and provided with a black air outlet and the tailpipes are now trapezoidal instead of oval. Likewise, the taillights, which continue to work with LED technology, have been designed less round and the rear bumper strips have been eliminated. In the interior, on the other hand, only the materials and colors have been changed and the use of inlays expanded. The V6 gasoline engine has a variable valve control called VTEC and a displacement increase by 200 cm³ to 3.7 liters. Thus, the maximum torque in the medium speed range should be increased by up to 20%. Thanks to the revised five-speed automatic transmission, the acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h has been reduced by 0.2 seconds and is now 7.1 seconds. In addition, the insulation of the engine compartment has been improved and an active noise filter has been added. Active head restraints are now available for the front seats as new, standard safety equipment.

After 25 years, Honda took the Legend out of its range in Europe in autumn 2010 due to insufficient demand. In Japan it rolled off the assembly line for two more years.
