In 1986, Land Rover decided to offer a relatively inexpensive model between the Defender, known only as Land Rover until 1990 , and the Range Rover, and began developing a car in the price range between DM 35,000 and DM 50,000. Japanese SUV manufacturers entered the European market and required swift action. In just three years, Mike Donovan and his team developed the Discovery, which came onto the market in October 1989 at a price of DM 45,350.
By the end of 1998, 353,843 first series Discovery had been sold. The Discovery was the best-selling Land Rover at the time, outperforming the Defender . The Discovery was also aimed at a different target group, as it combined good road and terrain properties.
The body and chassis were based on the Range Rover of the time with a 2.54 m (100 inch ) wheelbase. The Discovery owed part of its success to its new diesel engine (Tdi), which developed 83 kW (113 hp) at 4000 rpm. The displacement of 2496 cm³ corresponded to the previously used diesel engine. On the basis of the old engine block, a new engine was developed together with the Austrian manufacturer AVL List . A 3.5-liter V8 with 113 kW (155 PS) and later with a 3.9-liter V8 134 kW (182 PS) was also on offer in various markets. Over time, the Tdi was further developed and the 200 was replaced by the 300 Tdi. The electronic control units of the engines were refined and their torque increased.
The following special editions were offered: Country Life (Switzerland 1991), Freestyle (France 1993), County Rider (France 1993), Sunset (Germany 1995), Sunseeker (Germany 1996), Camel Trophy (Germany 1998) and Esquire (Germany 1998).
Under the name Honda Crossroad I , the Discovery with the 3.9-liter V8 engine was sold in Asia from mid-1993 to autumn 1998 .

The Discovery Series II, presented in November 1998, was powered by a light-alloy 4.0-liter V8 with 136 kW (185 hp) or a 2.5-liter Td5 diesel engine with 102 kW (139 hp), both of which had one standard all-wheel drive. From spring 2003 there was a 4.6-liter V8 engine with 162 kW (220 hp), but not on the German market.
A four-speed automatic transmission was available for an extra charge of DM 4000 at that time. An anti-lock braking system (ABS) with a braking system that was new at the time was standard. Another technical feature was Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE). It suppresses the body's roll to the side for a safer driving experience and avoids the risk of tipping over during an abrupt evasive maneuver. There was also the so-called Self Leveling Suspension (SLS), an assistance system that automatically regulates the level on the rear axle. The traction control Electronic Traction Control (ETC) ensured that when slip occurs at a wheel, the driving force is transmitted to the wheels, find the grip. The second Discovery grew in length by 6.5 cm. However, the wheelbase remained the same. There was an optional third row of seats so that seven seats were available. These had either a standard fabric upholstery or an optionally available leather interior. From 2000 a Harman Kardon audio system was standard.
Facelift
At the end of 2002 the Discovery underwent an extensive facelift. There were some innovations, such as the headlights, which got a greater range. Leather seats, automatic air conditioning or electrically adjustable front seats were available at an additional cost. One goal that Land Rover pursued with the revised Discovery was to boost sales, as they had fallen 63 percent since the predecessor. The engines included the 2.5-liter direct injection diesel with pump-nozzle technology developed by Land Rover itself, with an output of 102 kW (139 hp). The 4.0-liter V8 developed 136 kW (185 hp).

From the start of production in July 2004, the third-generation Discovery was equipped with a 140 kW (190 hp) 2.7-liter six-cylinder common-rail diesel with turbocharging (TDV6) and a 4.4-liter V8 -Gasoline engine with 220 kW (299 PS). The diesel engine comes from Ford / PSA and the gasoline engine from Jaguar. For the North American and Australian markets, there was also a 4.0-liter V6 with 161 kW (219 hp) in 2005. An automatic transmission with manual and sport mode was available as an option. The Discovery also received the so-called terrain response system. A rotary switch can be used to choose between five different driving programs between the front seats: on-road operation, mud and furrows, sand, grass / gravel / snow and crawling gravel. The electronic controls for vehicle level, engine, traction control, automatic transmission and hill descent control are ideally adjusted to the selected surface.
In length, the Discovery increased by 130 millimeters to 4835 mm, and in width by 35 millimeters to 1885 mm. The wheelbase grew by 345 mm to 2885 mm. It was equipped with six airbags, air conditioning, ESP, CD radio, window lifters and central locking. Optional equipment features were xenon light, air suspension / terrain response, PDC, vision package, larger wheels, electrically adjustable leather seats, cruise control and another sound system.

The Discovery 4, launched in September 2009, is not actually the fourth generation of the series, but is officially called that by Land Rover. Rather, the Discovery 4 is a modified version of the model produced since 2004.
The Discovery has been adapted more visually to the larger Range Rover and has also received technical improvements.
For the Discovery 4 there were only diesel engines at the beginning, a 2.7-liter six-cylinder common rail diesel (TDV6) that was already familiar from its predecessor, and a 3.0-liter diesel engine. V6 with 180 kW (245 PS). This was a new development in cooperation with PSA and Jaguar .
The 2.7-liter engine from Ford was replaced in the early summer of 2010 by a reduced-power version of the 3.0-liter with 155 kW (211 hp). Meanwhile, in some countries, such as Switzerland, Poland, Sweden, America, Australia and Russia, a 5.0-liter V8 petrol engine with 276 kW (375 hp) is available. Only this engine is installed in the armored version.
Since the end of 2010, the Discovery was also available as a 256 hp SDV6, which replaced the TDV6 with 245 hp. Since then, the 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF has also been standard in all diesel engines. The finer gear steps reduce fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions and can be recognized by the new automatic rotary control known from the Jaguar XF (also known as the “drive selector”).
With the facelift presented at the IAA 2013, the petrol engine now available as a V6 also received an 8-speed automatic.
In Austria there are two variants known as trucks with a protective grille behind the first or second row. This enables a classification as a truck (2-seater) or exemption from the NoVA (4-seater) to be achieved.

Discovery SVX
Land Rover presented the Discovery SVX at the International Motor Show in September 2017 . This was developed by the special department SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) and is the manufacturer's third performance model after the Range Rover Sport SVR and the Range Rover SVAutobiography . The SUV is powered by the five-liter supercharged gasoline engine from the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. In contrast to these, however, the drive produces 19 kW (25 HP) less. In February 2019, the manufacturer announced that the Discovery SVX would not go into series production.
Discovery by the police and as an expedition vehicle
Some models of the Discovery range have been used as patrol cars by the British police, as has the Defender. The Discovery is also used by the German police. 350 Discovery with TD5 engine were used by the Federal Border Police and the riot police of the federal states.
The Camel Trophy was regularly driven with Discovery models and other Land Rover vehicles until 1998. The Camel Trophy Discovery in sand beige with luggage rack and additional headlights enjoys cult status.
Discovery in the movie
Like other members of the Land Rover family, the Discovery has often appeared in James Bond films . The Land Rover Discovery can also be seen in the English series Midsomer Murders and The Inspector Lynley Mysteries . Ethan Hunt's team of agents, aka Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible III , drove a Discovery III while chasing the streets of Shanghai . In the Norwegian-American crime series Lilyhammer seen Steven Van Zandt often as Frank "The Fixer" Tagliano behind the wheel of a Discovery IV.
