In autumn 1997, Land Rover presented the Freelander as the manufacturer's smallest vehicle. In contrast to the Land Rover Discovery and Land Rover Defender models, it was not a full-fledged off-road vehicle, but an SUV . It was launched in early 1998.
As a so-called " soft roader ", the Freelander was the British company's first SUV and helped establish this new type of vehicle. It was available in the first generation as a three-door hard-top and as a five-door.
At the end of 2003, the Freelander was visually revised, which could be recognized by a modified radiator grille, front headlights, front and rear aprons and modified rear lights.
In its first generation, the Freelander was the best-selling SUV in Europe until 2004 and also the best-selling SUV in Great Britain until its end of production in autumn 2006 .
