Richard Sorrowful
Richard Gramlich (born August 6, 1925 in Mannheim ; † September 23, 2006 in Unterhaching ) was a German religious scholar . He is considered an important researcher of Sufism ( Islamic mysticism ).
Life
In 1946 Richard Gramlich joined the Jesuit Order . In 1969 he received his doctorate at the University of Basel and in 1971 he was appointed professor for the history of religion at the theological faculty of the University of Freiburg im Breisgau . He retired in 1987 and lived near Basel in Switzerland.
In 2004 his important library came on permanent loan to the Bavarian State Library in Munich.

In addition to these publications, there is a considerable number of annotated translations of pioneering writings by Islamic mystics, most of which appeared in the Freiburg Islam Studies series .
