The vehicle design goes back to the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept, which was shown at the 2014 New York International Auto Show . Gerry McGovern was responsible for the design of the Discovery Sport. The British designer also designed the Range Rover Evoque . The automobile is a road-oriented off-road vehicle with optimized driving characteristics. Land Rover is pursuing the goal of building Discovery as a sub-brand with the vehicle. In addition to the Discovery Sport, the Discovery also exists as a high-quality off-road vehicle.
The Discovery Sport is produced on the Land Rover LR-MS platform , a heavily modified version of the Ford -EUCD platform. Land Rover was part of the Ford Group until March 2008 and is now part of the Indian manufacturer Tata Motors . A five or seven seat version is available.
Its predecessor Freelander was launched in early 1998 and built in two generations by autumn 2014, making the Discovery Sport the third generation. In Germany, the vehicle is assigned to the automotive middle class . In the United Kingdom it is called a compact SUV .
The Discovery Sport had the same engines installed in the Freelander 2 in the first year of production. These are the Ford EcoBoost four-cylinder 2.0 liter turbocharged petrol with 176 kW (240 PS) and the Ford Duratorq four-cylinder 2.2 liter turbocharged diesel with 110 kW (150 PS) and 140 kW (190 PS) respectively. The first engine will be offered in the United States and the second engine in Europe. From August 2015, the Ingenium engines from Jaguar Land Rover will be used instead of the engines from Ford . The Ingenium engine family are four-cylinder engines with turbocharging . The engines are installed transversely, which creates additional space in the interior.
The Discovery Sport is equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission from ZF or a 6-speed manual transmission from Getrag . Both are also available for the Range Rover Evoque. The vehicle does not have a reduction gear for off-road use, but like the Freelander it has the Terrain Response System . The driver can choose a driving program here depending on the surface being driven on. In addition, a variant without all-wheel drive is also produced.
The Discovery Sport is manufactured at Jaguar Land Rover's Halewood Body & Assembly Facility near Liverpool , as is the Range Rover Evoque. Jaguar Land Rover Ingenium engines are produced in Wolverhampton , England. The engines supplied by Ford were manufactured in factories in the London borough of Dagenham and in Valencia , Spain.
Technical details
The newly developed, compact multi-link rear axle from the British manufacturer is used for the first time in the Land Rover Discovery Sport. With long suspension travel and an axle articulation of 340 millimeters, it ensures, among other things, the Land Rover-typical off-road mobility. The steering knuckles , like the lower wishbones, are made of a thin-walled hollow aluminum casting. The small spring domes on the rear axle enable the installation of a 5 + 2 seat solution, in which the third row of seats can be lowered almost flush into the vehicle floor.
With the adaptive chassis control Adaptive Dynamics , the Discovery Sport has MagneRide TM dampers with which the vehicle damping can be individually adjusted. The damping fluid is provided with magnetic particles and is exposed to a magnetic field , whereupon the viscosity decreases or increases. In this way, the damping can be set to be harder or softer as required.
