Ingenium engine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ingenium refers to a four-cylinder engine series developed by the British-Indian automobile manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) , which has been manufactured since the beginning of 2015 and was initially installed in the Jaguar XE .

The Ingenium engine from JLR

General

Jaguar Land Rover has been manufacturing the downsizing engine family since the beginning of 2015 in the newly built plant near Wolverhampton . The engine block is made of aluminum . It is compact and extremely stiff, offers good heat dissipation and high wear resistance. Initially only available as a diesel variant, the Ingenium engines contain turbochargers with adjustable turbine guide vanes (VTG) , high-pressure direct injection , variable valve control, a stop-start system , a two-part cooling circuit and two overhead camshafts (DOHC). The architecture can be used for different displacement and transmission variants as well as for different drive systems (rear, all-wheel and hybrid drive). In addition, the engines are designed for both transverse and longitudinal installation in order to cover a wide range of models. The engine presented in September 2014 has so far been available in two output levels with 120 and 132 kW (163 and 180 hp). The engines are currently used in the Jaguar XE , Jaguar XF , Jaguar F-Pace , Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque .

Modular architecture

A special feature is the modular architecture, which allows cross-model configurations and components. In the Ingenium engines, the dimensions for bore and stroke are the same, as are the cylinder spacing and the cylinder volume of 500 cm³. The modular architecture also improves configurability and flexibility in order to be able to react quickly to future legal regulations, new competition criteria or fluctuations in global demand.

turbocharger

The different engine variants have exhaust gas turbochargers, which increase the power output especially in the lower speed range with low consumption and low CO 2 emissions. In the first two expansion stages with 120 kW (163 PS) and 132 kW (180 PS), the developers used a turbocharger with adjustable turbine guide vanes (VTG turbocharger).

Internal friction

The design aims to use fuel as efficiently as possible with low internal friction . To do this, the engineers moved the crankshaft off the center axis of the cylinder block and instead of plain bearings used lower-friction roller bearings for the camshafts. The use of a variably controlled oil pump , which delivers the required amount of lubricant depending on the speed , engine load and temperatures , and a variably working water pump also reduce internal friction.

A camshaft adjustment (variable cam timing) from the supplier BorgWarner ensures short response times and thus also helps to increase the efficiency of the engine.

NVH

Another focus of the development was the optimization of the NVH behavior (noise, vibration, harshness). In order to achieve the lowest possible level of vibration, the manufacturer uses a stiffened cylinder block and two balance shafts . The balance shafts are also mounted on roller bearings. Other measures such as an acoustic cover for the oil pan, decoupled injection nozzles and a slightly oval injection pump wheel (0.5 mm) also improve the running smoothness.
