The Honda StepWGN first appeared at the Tokyo Motor Show as "F-MX" in 1995. Production as the StepWGN began on May 8, 1996. At that time, commercial mid-engine delivery vehicles in the low-price segment were very popular in Japan . Only the passenger side had a sliding door. In August 1997 the passenger airbag and ABS also became standard.
From May 1999 there was a revised front, where the appearance of the headlights was changed; in addition, the rear license plate moved further down. In 2000, remote-controlled central locking became standard equipment. A 2.0-liter petrol engine with 125 hp and a 5-speed manual transmission was used as the drive .

The second generation of the Honda StepWGN debuted in 2001. However, it was only a revised StepWGN 1 with a similar design. The interior now enabled 4 different seating options, including "Play Mode" (seats lined up opposite), "Food Mode" and "Sleep Mode". In “cargo mode”, the second row of seats was folded flat in the floor for more cargo space. The fuel tank has been moved from the left to the right. The 2.0-liter DOHC K20 i-VTEC engine now offered 158 hp, improved performance and fuel consumption.
In May 2002 there were minor improvements with the keyless entry function and better interior construction materials. From October 2002, the front and rear bumpers were painted the same color as the car, and a radio with CD player became standard equipment.
In June 2003, standard electric windows and a cool box that uses the rear air conditioning followed, and an electric tailgate could be ordered as an option.
The "Spada" series with a 2.4-liter DOHC i-VTEC petrol engine (160 hp) was also added to the range. From June 2004, a CD / mini-disk radio was standard, and xenon headlights were offered as an option.

The 3rd generation of the Honda StepWGN was a comprehensive revision of the previous models. Mechanical changes were a 4-speed automatic transmission , while the 2.4-liter model received a CVT transmission . Unlike the previous generations, there were now sliding doors on both sides in order to stay competitive with competitors such as Nissan Serena and Toyota Estima . Thanks to the new low-floor chassis, the interior size remained unchanged, although the body had become shorter. The handling of the vehicle has also been improved. While the 2.0-liter 153HP K20A engine now produced 5 hp less, the 2.4-liter K24A engine still offered 160 hp. Honda now installed large triangular windows in the front area to reduce the blind spot. Available options in the StepWGN were a rare light wood grain "parquet" and a panoramic roof.
From February 2007 a center armrest was standard in the second row of all models and from November 2007 the front mask and front bumper were redesigned. In 2008 there were small changes to the StepWGN with a new front grille, new front apron, new taillights and rims. In addition, a reversing system was included in all models.
